When this photo was snapped in 1954, PS's big suburban Old Looks were indeed the "Kings Of The Road".
Alas, that was many, many years ago.........

The former PS garage at Oradell; it is clear from the "TNJ" emblems sported by Fishbowl #535A that the PS era has, indeed, vanished.......

Broad & Lombardy, Newark, 1975.
PS's long-established "school run" operations continued through the "TNJ" era, as can be seen here.......

I still clearly remember when the big "PS" Old Look suburbans (like their transit counterparts) still wore the classic gray scheme, back in the early 1960's.
Now, it's 1975, and such veteran "PS" workhorses will soon be replaced by new Flex New Looks, wearing the new "TNJ" insignia......

In 1976, the remaining "PS" Old Look suburbans were indeed endangered species; at least, the distinctive dash wings still had a little more time to be appreciated, before they, like the buses they adorned, disappeared......

Once upon a fondly-remembered yesterday, in the great city of Newark, the vast and mighty "PS" empire even extended its far-flung network into new underground dominions......

When this photo was taken in 1978, the long and enviable career of PS's huge fleet of Old Looks had ended.
Devoid of insignias and lettering, these forlorn, now-redundant buses (here seen at the Newton Avenue garage) are almost symbolic; the halcyon days of "PS", when it was New Jersey's largest bus operator, were, clearly over.......

On August 23rd, 1971, Transport of New Jersey came into being.
This was a new name for "Public Service Coordinated Transport", the organization that began in 1928, as a result of the merging of the old PSRy Company with the Public Service Transportation Company, that, at the time, operated the buses.
TNJ than went on to further consolidate the former PSNJ divisions down to two, a northern division and a southern division.
In October of 1980, the new state-run New Jersey Transit absorbed the former PSNJ/TNJ bus lines, including the Newark City Subway..........

In the early/mid-1960's, PS was repainting their Old Look fleet into two different color schemes, for, I guess, a more "modern" look.
The Old Look transits received a new two-tone green scheme, while the suburbans were repainted blue/white.
Just when the very last PS Olds Look were repainted, I do not know; in one of my CNJ books, there is a color photo of commuter trains laying over in the yard at Atlantic Highlands in 1966; in the background, you can see a PS Old Look, still in the old gray.
From what I can remember, that time would have been about right, give or take a year or two.....

There are only a few photos on this page, but they are well worth looking out.

One rare photo depicts one of the PSNJ's Hudson River ferryboats (PS operated the 125th St. line until 1943) as well as a 1900's-era view showing a number of streetcars at the Edgewater ferry terminal, looking west from the ferry........

Just as many old-time Hudson County area-residents kept on referring to "PATH" as "the Tubes" for many years afterwards, many also kept on referring to "TNJ" as "Public Service".
In Newark, if you were riding aboard one of the City Subway cars, you'd hear people talking about "PS", "Bam's" (Bamberger's), or "The Pru" (Prudential)
Think of the many hundreds of Bamberger's employees and customers, along with the employees of "PS" and "Pru" that once depended on PS streetcars, ASV's, and buses, over the decades.
Also, those thousands that were employed (or shopped) at the other major department stores and other downtown Newark business establishments.
Myself, the first time I can remember seeing a "TNJ" insignia was on the City Subway PCC's, after they were repainted in the new Bicentennial paint........
