That '57 Olds three piece rear window kind of 'echoes' its GM PD-4104 "cousin", doesn't it? |
traildriver:
Again, it's obvious that "great minds think alike"......I, also, was thinking of the rear window of a 4104!
The rear windows of the 4104 and the SCENICRUISER (think, too, the 4103) were quite different and modern for the time; recall, most buses (transit and highway) used curved rear windows of different stylings, as did the early VW Beetles, which clearly echoed the rear-window styling of the buses of that time......

Toledo, Ohio, 1930's.
Ahh, what magnificent, sleek, stylish structures the streamlined bus depots were!
Note, also, the classic "It Happened One Night"-era front-engined coach.......

traildriver:
Thanks for this kink: I've read much on this historic station in a book I have about NYC stations; if this station had served buses instead of trains, its overall styling would have been right "in step" with other modern bus stations/terminals around the country.
Amazing, how, long ago, "modern" met sleek and stylish.
Today, "modern" is, for the most part, stark, cold, and anything BUT pleasing to the eye.
Ahhh, "progress"..........

Speaking of historic, streamlined, moderm bus stations, we would be amiss if we did not at least make brief mention of this once-stately, and beautiful facility*......

Here's the GREYHOUND station at Jackson, TN (note the GREYHOUND 4104 and the "indy" Buffalo)
Judging by the autos in this view, it would seem to date this postcard to when "Bison" were still fairly recent.....

In the three years I was there, our fleet consisted of PD-4106's (just a few), PD-4107's, MC-5's and MC-7's, plus a few PD-4501 Scenicruiser's, most of which we had were converted to "combo's". Arrow & Black Hills Stage Lines was the only 'tenant line' in our depot. They ran a daily PD-4107 or PD-4903 on their long route from Omaha to Rapid City, SD.
When I was sent on a thirty day TDY assignment in San Francisco in '71, I then got to see all the "exotic" hand me down coaches moved from the 'mainline' to the commuter division's, including PD-4104's, PD-4103's and even some recently retired 'Silversides' PD-4151's. As well as the Fishbowls, and Old Looks...even a few Mack's. The Old Looks and Macks were used on the Marin County routes, the Fishbowls on the Peninsula routes, and the old parlor's on East Bay routes, for the most part... |

That "indy" was operated by Gulf Transport Company, headquarterd in Mobile, AL. They were a wholly owned subsidiary of the Illinois Central Gulf Railroad, one of the last of its kind. They ran routes from St. Louis all the way to Mobile. |
