Fellows:

Rail historians often discuss the colorful era of Pullman cars, back in the days of stylish American rail travel.

However, all too often, the humble Pullman porter is relegated to the background, if even mentioned at all.

Most assume that all porters did was carry luggage, make up berths and shine shoes.

Far from it.

As part of their "housekeeping" duties, they also had to be mechanics, electricians, and troubleshooters; they had to know the "inside details" of whatever cars they were working aboard.

These hard-working men worked for with dedication and dignity for many years, but also, often had to put up with racial slurs and general verbal abuse.

And yet, these stalwart men performed as TRUE professionals, carrying their load with smiles, determination, fortitude and PRIDE.

Today, virtually every one of these proud men have vanished into history, like the elegant Pullman cars in which they toiled for so many years.

The older generation of AMTRAK's African-American sleeping car attendants out the last living link to the hard-working Pullman porters of another era, courtesy of less-than-respectful white passengers.

Let us never forget them....nor their hard work and many sacrifices........

"NYO"

This stirring article dates back to 2009; sadly, the elderly gentlemen of that time have since passed on to their rewards........just think of the rich stories that these hard-working men might have told, if still with us today.......

The history of the Pullman Company; think about it........this massive, once-proud company would not have been able to function without the toil of the humble, hard-working porters.......

The rich history of the elegant, all-steel Pullman, "ABRAHAM LINCOLN", a grand and historic relic of a long-ago era in rail travel.

Think of the dedicated that worked with pride and dignity aboard this vehicle, over the course of the years......

The compelling story of the late Mr. George Smock, a 3rd generation Pullman porter.

A dedicated worker and fine gentleman, for certain......
