"HUDSON BUS" Grumman #1210.

This was the color scheme I remember for the NHBL GRUMMANS (Metros?), back in the early/mid-1990's.

A good friend of mine then drove an ex-Cleveland Fishbowl on the #1 (which carried the number of the previous B-118, and Old Look)

The last B-118 I remember my buddy driving on the #1 (circa-1997) was a GRUMMAN (or Metro, cannot recall exactly)

NJT operates the former NHBL #1 today, using NABIs........but, it just ain't the same......

Back in 1981, ex-"ORANGE & BLACK" Fishbowls (still in their original paint) and "SHORTLINE" Buffalos were still common sights, as were buses of the R&T........

In discussing "RED & TAN" (which, as we know, also served Jersey City), I think it is important to recall that, unlike today, Jersey City was still a mixture of stolid blue-collar and "well-to-do" white collar residents, living in diverse, long-established neighborhoods.

Jersey City, through the 1960's and into the 70's, still had Journal Square as a bustling transportation hub and commercial/retail/entertainment center.

Jersey City was still home to many diverse industries, virtually all of which no longer exists (recall Colgate? American Can? Armour Star? Brunswick Laundry?)

When the sprawling COLGATE plant at Exchange Place was in its heyday, employees could easily reach their workplace via the PRR, the H&M tubes, as well as several local bus lines.

Back in the day, Jersey City residents used public transport (streetcars, buses, rapid transit, and commuter trains) to shop, to visit, to go to work (or school) and even to attend religious services (Jersey City also had several synagogues, many years ago)

Many of Jersey city's old parishes have long since either disbanded or merged with other congregations.

With the buses removed from "The Square" since 1974, Journal Square is no longer the busy, bustling commercial/retail hub it once was, a half-century ago.

In the old days, many "well-to-do" citizens lived on Hudson Boulevard, which was, indeed, quite "ritzy" in its day (the illustrious Jersey City Mayor, Frank Hague, once lived in a posh penthouse at 2600 Hudson Boulevard, overlooking the steady parade of lowly "Boulevard" buses down below)

Like the H&M (PATH), Jersey City's once-diverse streetcar and local bus network indeed were the pulsing lifelines of the town........

Remember, also, "WESTWOOD TRANSPORTATION", also known as "the Blue Coach"

The buses would carry the slogan: "RIDE THE BLUE COACH", and "WESTWOOD LINES"

These buses (like R&T) linked the GWB terminal (and the PABT) with a number of Hudson and Bergen communities, such as:

PARAMUS (Garden State Plaza)

MAYWOOD

ROCHELLE PARK

NORTH HACKENSACK

HACKENSACK

BOGOTA

TEANECK

RIDGEFIELD PARK

MORSEMERE (Fort Lee)

RIDGEFIELD

FAIRVIEW

NORTH BERGEN

WEST NEW YORK

NORTH BERGEN

On the front of a 2/65 TT I have in my collection, there is a Fishbowl bearing an "EXPRESS" sign, and, beneath that:

".....the speedy, comfortable way to travel to and from business and for shopping. Frequent regular trips with extra rush hour service provided in the morning and early evening........"

Also:

"Direct Connections With New York Subways To The World's Fair"

"NYO"

Recall, also, "MOHAWK COACH LINES, INC." (main offices located in Little Ferry)

Their slogan was "RIDE THE BLUE COACH"; at one time, this company operated particularly handsome ACF-BRILL C-44's.

Among areas served (out of the PABT):

HAVESTRAW

BEAR MOUNTAIN

BEACON

POUGHKEEPSIE

NEW HYDE PARK

Ahhh, "RED & TAN"....so much more pleasing to hear than the generic, conglomerate "COACH USA"........ Razz

All:

In going through some more old TT's in my collection, I came across a "SPECIAL HOLIDAY SCHEDULE" for "RED & TAN" (Route #9), effective 1964.

On the front:

9
NEW CITY-NYACK
NEW YORK CITY
(via George Washington Bridge

LV. FROM PLATFORM #22

A notation reads:

".....this schedule will be used on certain holidays as will be indicated by notices posted to the public....."

(the TT includes runs for both the "#9" and "#9A")

For schedule information, the main office number was DU 4-2400

The number for the GWB station: LO 4-1114

Charter Bus Information:

In NJ:
DU 4-2400

In NYC:

BR 9-6526 (recall, the phone # for the now long-defunct Hudson River Day Line was BR 9-5151)
