Here's a rare and handsomely-restored WHITE 798, resplendent in classic "RED & TAN" livery.

R&T used WHITES into the early 1960's.

Note the destination sign:

"DOWNTOWN TO FULTON ST. BROOKLYN"

Like so many of the "fallen flag" bus old companies many of us older fellows remember, the "RED & TAN" offered frequent service to many destinations, 50-odd years ago.

For instance, R&T's "#99s" once served (from the PABT):

WEEHAWKEN

UNION CITY

JERSEY CITY

BAYONNE

STATEN ISLAND

PERTH AMBOY

KEYPORT*

KEANSBURG*

*Until late 1966, these towns were also served by the CNJ's Atlantic Highlands branch.

As per a 1964 TT, tickets for this line could be purchased at:

PABT (windows #'s 19 through 23)

STATEN ISLAND:

"FINK'S PRINCESS BAY GARAGE"

PERTH AMBOY:

"PURITY ICE CREAM SHOP" (Man, talk about going back to Norman Rockwell's America!) Wink

In this discussion, we cannot leave out "DOMENICO"; this photo from 1975, showing #537 on a long-ago fan trip, is wonderfully dated in a number of ways.....Wink

Back in the day......

"RED & TAN" dated back to an era when there were several bus companies that used the color of their buses as the company name:

"RED & TAN"

"ORANGE & BLACK"

"BLUE & WHITE"

(Jersey City locals, long ago, often referred to the "MONTGOMERY & WEST SIDE" buses as "The Red Bus")

As seen on the front of their timetables, "INTER-CITY" buses were known as "The Brown Bus With The Orange Band".........

Note the "RIDE THE RED BUS" placard which is displayed on the front of this "AVENUE B & E. BROADWAY" Fishbowl.

As so many Jersey City residents, years ago, referred to the old "MONTGOMERY & WEST SIDE" buses as "The Red Bus", this sign would have been quite appropriate to use (albeit with Jersey City destinations!)

Sure don't see any "Red & Tan" colors in this photo..... Rolling Eyes

On the side of this MC-9, we see "99S"; the destination sign reads:

"#144 STATEN ISLAND EXPRESS"

A few personal memories of the "Red & Tan".......

Just prior to the opening of the new PATH Transportation Center at JSQ, I took a number of photos of the buses loading "out on the Square", knowing that scenes like this would soon be history (If I had a scanner, you may be sure I'd share these pictures here!)

I took two photos that featured a R&T Old Look; one is a view looking towards the buses as they were loading, from left to right, a R&T Old Look on the "#2", a "LAFAYETTE & GREENVILLE" Old Look, and a SHBL Old Look.

The other photo shows the rear of the R&T bus, its rear ad frame devoid of a placard; though the number of the bus is not seen, the license plate was:

"OXR-299"

One time, in the early 80's, I was coming home from work in Lower Manhattan, and decided to go to JSQ (via PATH), so I could ride a NHBL Old Look on the #1, and travel up to Nungessers, where I could then catch a "#22 HILLSIDE" for home (usually, this NHBL #1 bus was on Old Look either B-118 or B-145).

I was surprised to see a "RED & TAN" Old Look sitting in the #'s parking slot, and I thought, hey, this is a treat!

Well, it turned out that, for some reason, a R&T Old Look was in the SAME spot usually (always) occupied by a NHBL #1! Shocked (there was also no one in the little start's booth at the end of the platform, across from the #1's loading position)

I didn't think much of it, until I saw the driver signalling to make a left turn off the Boulevard and head west to Secaucus! Shocked

Turns out this was a #2 R&T in the WRONG slot!!!!

The friendly driver let me off, and I just waited at the NHBL stop for another #1 (this next #1 was a Fishbowl)

I only wish I had my KODAK Instamatic that day....but, at least, I still have the memories! Wink
