In discussing the old "indy" companies which were once so commonplace in the general Hudson County area, we cannot overlook "RED & TAN" (now part of "COACH USA".

Like "DE CAMP", "DOMENICO", and "BINETTI", R&T was once a family-owned company (Capitani)

R&T operated "local" service out of Journal Square for many years, and also operated out of the PABT and GWB terminals.

In Bergen County, routes #14 and #84 ran parallel to the old ERIE (later E-L) Northern Branch, which lost its commuter service in 1966.

R&T also once operated school runs.

Until the early 1960's, WHITES were also part of the fleet.

R&T was yet another company closely associated with the "Boulevard" outfits; it was not at all uncommon, back in the day, to see R&T buses parked (or being serviced) at a "Boulevard" garage.

Now.......let's take a brief trip back through time, back to the colorful "RIDE THE RED & TAN LINES" era....... Wink

While I loved all the old R&T buses, the Old Looks were always my especial favorites...... Wink

Compare the "old" and "new" R&T paint schemes in these 1981 photos, as displayed by two Fishbowls.

Interesting to note the "#5" sign on the one bus; this line was, for many years, a NHBL route that Mom and I rode often, back in the 1960's......

R&T #69, inbound for the PABT, 1981.

Note that the area that would display a route number on #69's roller curtain is blank; also, note the "Buffalo" bringing up the rear........

*Interesting that the company was founded in 1922 as "LACKAWANNA BUS", and, later, "CONSOLIDATED BUS LINES"......

#7240 ("HUDSON BUS") Flex New Look approaching Journal Square, 1983.

Note the old "#5" placard in the windshield; undoubtably, this same card also served on NHBL Old Looks and WHITES, in earlier years....I remember such placards VERY well, from my much younger days! Very Happy

The majestic, soaring spire of St. John's is seen towering on the right......

Though a PS/TNJ "Buffalo" is seen here front and center, the row of parked R&T Fishbowls, at right, is also of interest.

This bygone scene (1972) could not be duplicated today.......

At one time, "OLYMPIA TRAILS" operated as "RED & TAN in Hudson county; it had been part of the "COACH USA" group since 1998:
