Back in 1946, ASV #9228 (still in the old postwar paint) is seen here in Jersey City signed for the "#9 NEWARK AVENUE"..

Note the old PS center entrance trailer car body in the left background, being used as a waiting shelter; also, note cobblestoned streetcar rails..........

Here is one of PS's older ASV's, rebuilt from a 1920's YELLOW gas bus; note the complex overhead, and, also, the streetcar rails.

This older ASV is signed for the "#15 PASSAIC"; this line (Hoboken-Passaic) partially became an ASV line in 1936 (Hoboken-Secaucus); a small numbr of streetcars, however, operated on the remainder of the line until 1937, when ASV's replaced them, and the line became an all-ASV route........

Another timeless 1940's photo of one of the older YELLOW gas buses, rebuilt as an ASV.

This bus is seen here running on the "#5 KINNEY"; the line was operated by (deck roof) streetcars until October, 1936.........

ASV #9134, when still wearing the old prewar paint; the coach was serving the "49 UNION", which had the distinction of being the first major conversion by PSNJ from streetcar to ASV.

The run between Newark and Bound Brook took over two hours (rush-hour trips operated to the PS terminal's lower level, while off-peak runs terminated/started adjacent to the DL&W station at Broad St)

This line was converted over to ASV in September of 1935.........

Earlier, I'd mentioned that PS streetcars once passed beneath Penn Station in Newark; this photo, taken about 1936, shows one of the 4000/4100 series open cars* about to rumble underneath Penn Station's platforms (compare this photo with the postwar photo which I posted earlier here, showing an ASV passing underneath the station's arches)

Though these open cars did not operate on any of the routes running in the City Subway, they did operate into the lower level of the PS terminal, via the Cedar St. Subway.......

*This car was operating on the "#25 SPRINGFIELD", which became an ASV route in 1937.

Here is a rare photo of a new ASV on trials on the "#49 UNION" line in 1935; note that the front of the vehicle is not yet sporting the familiar PS wings.

Note the streetcar in the background; by September of this year, these cars would have either been retired, or assigned to other lines still using streetcars (for many years, 2200 series cars were the backbone of this line).

As I had noted earlier, the "#49" was the first major PSNJ conversion from streetcars to ASV's..........

This circa mid-1940's photo shows ASV #9291 running on the "#49" (photo looks to have been taken somewhere in Newark)

This photo is unusual, in that, on the front roller curtain, the route number is displayed on the right, instead of the left........

Sporting the familiar PS nose wings, we see ASV #9266 ( here signed for the "#25 SPRINGFIELD") at an unknown location, circa-1940........

This photo (taken about 1946) shows three ASV's (of varying vintages) laying over at some off-street terminal (this might have been either the "BIG TREE" loop, or the loop at Elmwood Avenue (at Springfield Avenue)

The ASV nearest the camera is signed for the "#13 BROAD" line; this line operated with streetcars until 1937 (for a brief period, these cars, during rush hours, ran through the lower level of the PS terminal via a new (short-lived) connection to the City Subway, terminating at Penn Station)

The replacement ASV's terminated runs in the lower level of the PS terminal.........

No location given for this photo, but the ASV facing the camera (note no PS dash wings) is signed for the "#15 PASSAIC".

This photo would have been taken prior back prior to 1944 (possibly late 1930's), as per the placards in the rear windows of the ASV on the right, advertising for the 125th St. and Bayonne (Bergen Point) ferries, which PS then operated.

Also, note the "FARE LIMIT" sign hanging from a cross span wire........

Can't you narrow this down a bit? Where did 15 Passaic run? This intersection is so unusual that it ought to be easy to prove after a good guess. That building with the narrow-wide-narrow windows on four upper floors is probably one of a kind.

Joe:

The "15 PASSAIC" (as I had mentioned earlier) ran between Hoboken and and Paterson; in the streetcar days, it was known locally as the "WHITE LINE", and was one of the few lines that entered Hoboken at street level, instead of via the El.

Leaving Hoboken (Hudson Place), the streetcars/ASV's running on this route proceeded through Jersey City Heights, traveling along Paterson Plank Road, Congress St., and Summit Avenue.

At Transfer Station (Union City, near the border with Jersey City), the route traveled along Paterson Plank Road to Secaucus.

The line then crossed the Hackensack River, through the Meadows, and on to Moonachie, then on to E. Rutherford, Carlton Hill, then into Passaic, Clifton, and Paterson (end of the line)

As mentioned earlier, this line was partially converted to ASV in 1936, with ASV's operating between Hoboken and Passaic.

Streetcars remained on the Passaic-Paterson segment until 1937, until that section was also converted to ASV operation...............

Here's another view, showing one of the older gas bus conversions to ASV, running on the "15 PASSAIC" (note that the roll sign was not properly set).......

Here's a "#15 PASSAIC" ASV pulling out of Hoboken (Hudson Place); note the copper-clad elevated PS trolley terminal (the old-time diner on the left was still in business into the 1960's)........

Location of the building in the wedge:
Paterson Plank Road runs diagonally on the left side of the buiding. Summit Avenue on the right side. Seventh Street, Union City, crosses in front of the clock. The clock is still there. The sign over the door now says Teamsters Building.
---
All-Service bus 9164 is facing away from the camera, looking north on Summit Avenue.
