Here is an interior view of an ex-NYCTA 9000 series TDH-5106 operated by Blue and White Bus Lines... note that the rear door was replaced with a solid window and a seat installed over the rear stepwell. Circa 1973

Second photo is of #201 another ex-NYCYA 9000 TDH-5106 operated by Lafayette-Greenville.

ALWAYS wonderful to see photos of my dear old friends! Very Happy

Though I never rode "BLUE & WHITE", I clearly remember the buses; I took a bunch of photos one hot Sunday in the summer of 1974 (I was 17 then!), and also took some photos of the ex-Yonkers New Look Macks.

One of the fellows there gave me a "GM" horn button and a NY license plate, both of which, of course, are prominently displayed in my archives today! Wink

The old "GREENVILLE" (Lafayette & Greenville) buses I knew very well from the days of my long-ago childhood; a close friend of my older brother's, for a time, drove a "GREENVILLE" bus, back in the early/mid-60's.

I also have two old jacket patches "GREENVILLE & LAFAYETTE" which depict (of all things) a three-axle highway-type bus, superimposed of the outline of the State of New Jersey.

The words "JERSEY CITY" are above the aforementioned lettering and insignia.

Needless to say, these are quite rare, and I proudly have them displayed in my extensive "archives" today.......ahhh, the memories!Very Happy

Please refresh my memory. What were the actual destinations of the Greenville and Lafayette? Did this line run on Garfield Avenue to connect the two? Thanks. Joe

Joe:

Though Mom and I often rode the "Greenville" buses many, many years ago, the only "terminal" I can remember is Journal Square; though my memory is usually quite sharp regarding the old local "indy" bus companies, here, I'm drawing a blank, regarding the actual route of the "Greenville" buses.

In the meantime, this might give you at least some idea of what bus routes in Jersey City are like these days (a FAR cry from what you and I remembered, so long ago)........

Hope this helps a little.......

Joe:

Here are a few "Greenville" photos (Flex New Looks and Old Looks)

In photo #693, the roller curtain reads:

"3 JOURNAL SQUARE/MEDICAL CENTER-SUMMIT AVENUE"

Like "Greenville", the old "CENTRAL AVENUE" lines also served the Medical Center.

Note the MACK's side roller curtain;"CITY LINE" is displayed; this was "Central's" northermost terminal.

This was an off-street station (w/a small waiting room and dispatcher's office) on the Union City-Jersey City border, on Summit Avenue; this is where Mom and I (after a walk of some several blocks) would board a bus to ride down to the old CNJ rail/ferry terminal on Johnston Avenue, before it closed down in 1967.

The buses going down to the CNJ terminal had signs that had white lettering on a red background.

In the 1975 photo, we see a "Central" Fishbowl at the garage, signed for "WESTERN ELECTRIC".

Growing up in Union City back in the 60's, I remember "Central" rostering both Old Looks and MACKS............

The population of Jersey City is around 265,000, and yet it seems that public transit gets weaker. Headways are cut on routes that once left depots every five minutes. The primary fault, of course, is the growth of private car ownership. I cannot blame those who speed around more quickly on HBLR, as (for example) from Newport Mall to the edge of Greenville. For that matter, people who visit Newport Mall 2x a month and toss the stuff into their car may be more efficient.
---
Thanks for mentioning the places Greenville and Lafayette visited. To me, it means that G & L is something of a brand name rather than a route description. Bergen Avenue IBOA, Boulevard IBOA, Central Avenue IBOA are route descriptions, not G & L.

Joe:

You are most welcome! Wink

Back in the 60's, Journal Square was indeed a beehive of activity, bus-wise, except, perhaps, for Sunday afternoons and late night hours.

You are right; Jersey City's bus network has grown progressivly weaker of the years.

Recall "DOMENICO", which also operated commuter buses, in addition to tour buses?

I have seen photos of "Greenville" buses lettered for both "GREENVILLE & LAFAYETTE" and "LAFAYETTE & GREENVILLE".

The oldest photo I ever saw of a "Greenville" bus dated back to the early/mid 1940's (the bus was built by "AUTOCAR"), and was lettered "GREENVILLE & LAFAYETTE".

Back in the day, the buses in Jersey City were indeed an integral part of the neighborhoods they served.

I remember "locals" referring to the "Montgomery & West Side" as "The Red Bus", and the "Greenville" buses as "The Green Bus".

Back in our day, not only was Journal Square the thriving commercial and transportation heart of Jersey City, but it was also a major bus terminal, for local, suburban, and long-distance lines.

IMHO, when the PATH Transportation Center opened in 1974, removing the buses from the Square itself, that was the beginning of the end for the Square itself, at least, the Square that we once knew so well.....

Recall, also, the "DOWNTOWN BUS COMPANY", which also began runs at Journal Square.

In this 1972 photo, the "DOWNTOWN" bus is alongside a "RED & TAN" Old Look; on the far left is a "BERGEN AVENUE" Fishbowl.

The entire business block on the left was razed some years back.......

"BERGEN AVENUE" #8*, here seen sporting school bus flashers and "SCHOOL BUS" signage (1977); PUBLIC SERVICE also used their buses in school service, back in the day.......

*Note only the word "BUS" (white-on-red) is displayed in the sign box......

Here, in 1975, we have #8* at the garage; note the NHBL Old Look parked in the background; back then, it was commonplace to see NHBL/SHBL/RED & TAN, and other local "indy" buses at one garage or another, being serviced.......

*Note the black-on-white "BERGEN AVENUE LOCAL" sign in the sign box....

SHBL Old Look #B-8* at the SHBL's garage in Bayonne, 1975 (note approach to the Bayonne Bridge in the background)

Note the NHBL Old Look parked on the right, and the suburban Fishbowl at the rear; the sign on the latter appears to read "CHARTER".......

http://bus.nycsubway.org/perl/show?660

*SHBL buses always had lower fleet numbers than their NHBL counterparts........

Here are two circa-1955 photos of the PS terminal at Exchange Place (this shed was also used by streetcars until 1949)

Note the buses signed up for the #14, #16, and #1.

Note, also, the overhead sign for the #43, which was a streetcar line until 1938 (this was also the last surface running streetcar in downtown Newark), and was replaced by ASV's that same year, using the lower level of the PS terminal at Newark.

On the far left, you can see the body of a PS streetcar trailer, being used as a waiting room (PS retired their ESSEX Division trailers in 1935; many became waiting shelters, such as this)

Though quite young, I remember that old streetcar body still in place at the terminal (the terminal itself vanished in the 1960's)

I also recall when the #16 (along with the #17) ran up the corner from us in Union City, on Summit Avenue..........
