Nowadays, with cruise ship superstructures looking like a "hyatt hotel on a barge", to maximize available space, the stacks are all but invisible.

The mega-cruise ship, Royal Caribbean's "Oasis of the Seas", had to be fitted with retractable stacks, to enable it to clear the Verrazzano Bridge to serve Cape Liberty, NJ.

traildriver:

VERY interesting trivia bit on the "Oasis Of The Seas" having retractable stacks; QUITE interesting! Wink

This reminds me of the old Mississippi riverboats; their TALL stacks were hinged to allow them to pass under bridges! Shocked

Speaking of clearances....

At the time the VZ Bridge was being proposed, there was much opposition from the US Navy, about the concern of Navy ships traveling to and from the old Brooklyn Navy Yard encountering clearance issues with the new bridge.

Sadly, though, the Navy Yard was past its heyday; recall, also, the old MOT facility in Bayonne; I well recall seeing Navy craft docked there, from passing SI ferries, many years ago........

The one in Red Hook is a whole lot easier to get to by public transportation, and is easier to drive to, if you are East of the Hudson than Cape Liberty...

Recall when Holland-America Line operated out of Hoboken? Smile

traildriver:

My late brother, Frank (who closely resembled Marlon Brando, back in the day!) had an old high-school buddy who went on to work for Holland-America in Hoboken (early 1960's) as a dock agent.

My brother and I drove down from Union City a number of times (in his '55 Chevy Bel-Air!) to the old pier on 5th St., and this fellow would always give us deck passes to go on board whatever ship was docked on that day (I clearly remember the majestic NIEW AMSTERDAM"!)

What a treat these visits were!

This long-gone pier was also seen a number of times in the classic Hoboken waterfront flick, "ON THE WATERFRONT" (1954)

At that tender age, I had no idea that I was witnessing history.......

Here's a timeless image of the the stately "NIEUW AMSTERDAM" at the old 5th St. pier in Hoboken (early 1950's); this classic scene was little changed by the early 1960's, the time when I visited the pier a number of times,

Hard to believe nothing seen here remains today...... Sad

From transatlantic liner to cruise ship; this page details the rich history of the magnificent "SS ROTTERDAM" (launched 1958) by 1969, she was already rendered surplus on the waning trans-atlantic sailings (by this late date, HA ships were no longer calling at Hoboken)

This stately liner then went through a refit and re-entered service as a full-time cruise ship.

Thankfully, this historic vessel is still afloat, now used as a floating hotel and museum......

traildriver:

Indeed!

Those classic liners were truly majestic, in every sense of the word.

I well recall the impressive prows of the classic liners when docked at the old West Side piers, back in the 60's; they seemed to dwarf the parked cars as though they were mere MATCHBOX toys! Shocked

In retrospect, I'm thinking back to the 50's and 60's, when ocean liners were still so commonplace, that many tinplate, die-cast, and plastic toys replicating them were readily available in toy stores and in 5-and-10's.

I have a number in my collection today; one of the rarest is a small tin "SS UNITED STATES" (I've had thi one nearly 60 years!) which more resembles the "SS CONSTITUTION"!

The larger (also tin) version (also made in Japan) I have of the same ship is more "spot on", with a radar scanner that revolves when the friction motor is actuated..... Very Happy

Excellent, exhaustive collection of old photos on this page; note the "wide angle" view of the "LUSITANIA" arriving in New York in 1907.

This rare photo was taken prior to the construction of the iconic Chelsea Piers.......

Some stately old "ocean greyhounds on this page" (the photo of the "UNITED STATES" at sea is truly magnificent).....
