Recall, also, from many decades ago back:
"ZIM LINES" (ISRAEL)
"GDYNIA-AMERICAN LINE" (POLAND)
"BALTIC AMERICAN LINE" (COPHENHAGEN) |

From:
"GREAT CRUISE SHIPS AND OCEAN LINERS" (William H. Miller, Jr. ("The Working Ships").......
".....working ships were a breed of specialists. As passenger vessels, the often lacked the glamour and luster of the larger liners; accommodations were basically austere, and speeds were slower....."
"......with the advent of inexpensive charter jet flights, these ships eventually drifted into oblivion.
......there was, at one time, many crowded immigrant sailings to Australia......"

....in a novel I am reading, part of the story deals with a British family immigrating to Australia in 1947, sailing aboard the "ORANSAY", and then, in 1952, back to England, via the "ORMONDE".
Both ships left and arrived at the Tilsbury docks......

GREAT links....thanks for sharing here!
The novel I referred to is "THE SEVENTH SUNRISE" by British actress Judy Cornwell ("Daisy" in the old BBC series, "Keeping Up Appearances")
The story begins in 1920 and ends in 1968; the novel takes place (in various locations) in Africa, India, Egypt, and Great Britain.
Many incidents from her family history were used in the (fiction) novel; in her highly-entertaining autobiography, "ADVENTURES OF A JELLY BABY", Judy describes, in detail, her family's voyage to Australia in 1947, and back again to England in 1952.
This also reminds me now of the long-gone "boat trains" and "Night Ferry" services, once commonplace in Great Britain......

In "ADVENTURES OF A JELLY BABY", Judy Cornwell describes her traveling to Egypt for research for her novel (late 1980's); her trip, as you might expect, took many weeks, as she had to research many different areas for her book.
She also needed to find the locations of old RAF bases.
She flew from Heathrow to Cairo; from there, after doing research. she traveled by bus (coach) to Alexandria and back.
From Alexandria, she then boarded an overnight train to Aswan.
She then flew to Abu Simbel; back at Aswan, she boarded a ship traveling up the Nile to Luxor......

Recalling the bustling days at many English ports, where "boat trains" to/from London connected with passenger ships; too, recall FRENCH LINE liners connecting with SNCF trains at Le Harve......

Fortunately, the major US and Canadian port cities can be directly accessed by large, ocean going ships. Hence, no need here for "boat trains"... |

On second thought, one does come to mind. Although Orlando is not really a major port city, it is a huge hub for air passengers destined to the big theme parks nearby, and also for the cruise ships home ported at Port Canaveral.
Brightline will be soon running passenger trains to connect Orlando airport with the FEC mainline at Cocoa to serve those ships, via short shuttle bus rides. It would be prohibitively expensive to build across the Indian River to directly serve the port.
OTOH, Brightline is extending from Miami to the Dodge Island cruise ship terminals...

Always nice to hear some POSITIVE news, for a change!
IMHO, I'm sure that anything connected with Disney, when better days come, will certainly be QUITE busy!
Recall, also, the long-gone auto ferries (which were more like "condensed" liners), that once ferried autos between Florida and Cuba.......

Though I've seen these pages before, they are all MORE than worth another look.....thanks for posting!
Earlier today on 1010 WINS, I heard that cruise line stocks are beginning to rise again, in anticipation of a post-COVD boom......let's home this comes to pass!
It is going to be a MASSIVE undertaking, most certainly, to get the ships of many carriers "back in shape", when things FINALLY start to rebound, and begin a return to normalcy........what ships will be retained....which will be rebuilt.....or retired......

.........earlier today, I heard on 1010 WINS that ROYAL CARIBBEAN will be resuming cruises out of Egypt in the coming months.
Let us hope that this most welcome news will be a sign of happier days to come, for all of the other cruise ship operators......
