St. George (Bay & Borough), 1971

Here we have a WAMATA "Dangerfield" leading a "Borough Bomber"*......

*Did the "Bombers" have a decent representation on Staten Island, or, were they in the minority?

WHat garage had them?

I don't know about 1980, but by 1982, the following 'Bombers' were assigned to Staten Island thus:

201-208, 436-452, 503-541, 553-565, PA32-PA69 - Castleton (95 total)

None that I know of to Yukon, and definitely - and significantly - none to Edgeware.

I see that there were more "Bombers" on Staten Island that I had previously thought; I would guess these buses replaced the oldest Fishbowls?

Funny, your "typo" has "Edgeware" instead of "Edgewater".

In the early 1920's, there was a major suburban real estate boom in London, when the Northern Line of the Underground was extended beyond Golders Green to EDGEWARE.

Underground advertising posters read thusly:

"MOVE WHERE? EDGEWARE!"

Yeah, that's what happens when you type this late at night . . . at least when the Edgewater pier collapsed, no "Bombers" were involved (again, all were concentrated at Castleton) . . . however, two of the WMATA Fishbowls sent over to sub for them were very much so . . .

Your's Truly also knows of the interesting "typos" that can "come to light", in the wee, small hours! Wink

I remember photos on the papers of that pier collapse; obviously, the pier was in far worse condition, structurally, than had been presumed.

I am guessing that, as the smallest borough, SI was allocated the smallest number of WAMATA buses........

DC buses seemed pretty narrow (96 inches wide) compared to their 'Noo Yawk' cousins (102 inches wide). Evident on the top of the front of each 'Dangerfield'.

I was noticing the same thing.

The "Dangerfields" in "Noo Yawk" did seem like "wide bodies", when compared to their DC counterparts.

I know that the CTA was operating 96" wide buses on certain routes, due to the tight clearances beneath the "L".......

An interesting bit of "Dangerfield" trivia..........

We often talk about the now-classic "Dangerfield" as being a bus that received little or no respect while on the streets of "Noo Yawk".

However, here in "Joisey", the lowly "Dangerfield" was THE "bus of choice" for the NJDOT; on behalf of TNJ and other NJ carriers, 866 "Dangerfields" were ordered.

This order was also the largest (at the time) bus order in the State.

Here in "Joisey", it would seem, the humble "Dangerfield" FINALLY got the respect it had always deserved (better late than never!)Wink

Used to see those type of buses passing by on the ramp from the PABT to the Lincoln Tunnel where I used to live prior to '81.

As we all know,in 1969, the "EXACT FARE" policy went into effect on the city's buses:

I am sure that drivers on "S'toa" routes up in "da Bronx" must have greeted this new policy with a sigh of relief,with robberies and other criminal activities on the rise.

Of course, the token agents who worked the booths on the subways, still had reason to be leery, especially during the off-hours...........

Regarding the new "exact fare"policy of 1969.......

I know this was discussed quite awhile back, but cannot recall of new fareboxes went also into service at this time, or were the boxes then in use retained?
