Until 1977, Castleton was the only depot (and known until then as Staten Island depot). Edgewater opened in 1977 until a certain collapse, then in 1981 Yukon opened. Anything post-1977 was 'Em-Tee-Yay'. By any name, Castleton dated back to 'Bee O'Tee' days.

W.B.:

Thanks!

So, if Castleton dates back to the "Bee-oh-Tee" era, that HAS to be an ANCIENT facility!!!!!!!!!

So, Castleton was the ONLY garage that ever handled Old Looks and MACKS.......

And to think, a decade before, a Mack with that same bus number (#6256) was stationed there . . .

That, incidentally, was also before the borough name was changed, necessitating the prefix for all bus routes being changed from 'R' to 'S'. (Staten Island had been, prior to 1975, officially known as the Borough of Richmond.)

W.B.:

Recall, one of the 1905-era (City-owned) Staten Island ferryboats (in the new "FIVE BOROUGHS" class) was the "RICHMOND".

Funny, I have never in my life referred to SI as "Richmond"; it has ALWAYS been "Staten Island" in my lingo! Wink

Until the early 1960's, Port Richmond was also linked to Bayonne, NJ, via the "SUNRISE FERRIES" (until the early 1940's, this crossing was operated by PSNJ)

I well remember riding this line when I was quite young; the open-deck ferries were very similar to the ones that ran between the SIRT station at Tottenville and Perth Amboy, until late 1963 (the SIRT operated this crossing with sidewheel, walking-beam ferries until 1948).

I also well recall the old Perth Amboy ferry........many, many moons ago.....

This 1955 photo was obviously taken during the off-peak; here we see two older model MACKS departing the St. George terminal (older MACKS such as these were quite common in my area, through the mid-1960's).......

Only about 7-8 years after this, "Dangerfields" in that same number range (9000's) were holding down SI routes.
