Beautiful (color) photo* of 42nd & 5th, early 1960's.

Note that the MACK running on 42nd, by this late date, no longer is emblazoned with "RIDE THE SURFACE WAY" over the windows; note, also, the Old Looks on 5th Avenue.....

*Many other vintage "Noo Yawk" photos are on this page with buses in prominence...... Wink

#3492, from the first "made-for-MaBSTOA" order of 1963, and from within the 132nd Street depot's allotment (apparently this may have been in exchange for the best-maintained of the Old Looks from that same depot being transferred to 'da Bronx', based on the history of what I read, as replacement for the most dilapidated of the old Surface rolling stock).

I may have noted this before, but there was a pic from 1963 of #3459 on Route #2 along Fifth and 42d (taken just two days after the JFK assassination):

I still wonder when that very rear side ad rack disappeared from those buses, I'm venturing after 1968.

W.B.:

Note in that classic photo how CLEAN everything looks? Wink

"Carmen", our faithful old TV repairman (remember them?) back in the 1960's, had the same model Chevy van as is seen alongside the bus (he was also, indeed, a dead-ringer for "Larry" of the splapstick-crazed 3 Stooges!) Rolling Eyes

The streets of "Noo Yawk" indeed looked a lot less colorful when all-over yellow replaced the colorful array of hues which attired the taxis..........time marches on, I guess.......

"Tee-Yay" green Fishbowl #4499 displaying a small rear side ad for the film "Fiddler On The Roof" (starring Topol as tradition-minded "Tevye"), back in 1971.....

A small rear side. Prior to about 1968-69 there were two small rear side ads - one on each side of the wheel.

Towards the very end of the CITGO ad on Bruckner Boulevard across the river, before it was replaced with one from Kent cigarettes Here is what the time/temperature display would have looked close-up (and in terms of the numerals, there's a degree of speculation there) . . .

https://www.flickr.com/photos/24498044@N03/51873014994/

That had been in place since fall 1962; the CITGO logo would have been put in in place of the older circular and triangular logo in or around December 1965.

And one other thing. If only that 15 were among the 5001-5165 and 5601-5790 "Dangerfields."

W.B.:

I had not noticed this prior to your rear side sign comment earlier, but, in looking through a number of "Tee-Yay" and MaBSTOA pictures (oldest 1969), no photos are shown of any buses featuring two small rear side ads.

Makes you wonder why these "far-to-the-rear" signs fell out of favor in the first place......

"NYO"

*As I had mentioned elsewhere, London's buses have been plastered with ads since the omnibus days; unlike here at home, however, the signs themselves were "pasted" onto the sides of the buses (upper deck only); open-staircase buses also displayed ads on their curving staircases.........

Another ad frame question:

I've seen photos of buses where the a/c unit at the rear was covered by an ad frame (I'm gathering this was only used to display ads during the cooler months)

When did this feature come into use, and when was it last used?

Was flipping through "WELCOME ABOARD THE GM NEW LOOK BUS" (McKane/Squier) to see if I could find any photos of Fishbowls carrying two small side rear ad frames.

Detroit has buses so fitted; ditto Omaha.

Greenfield (Mass) had stick-shift 4519's (single door) which featured a most unusual ad frame arrangement; four small frames per side, between the wheel wells.

GREAT LAKES TRANSIT CORP., also.

Denver's (METRO TRANSIT) operated several T8H-5308A's that had three small ad frames per side.........
