On a somewhat related note, when did the "Tee-Yay" began equipping buses with two-way radios?

I know that the subways had them by the 1960's, so I would guess it is a safe bet that they were appearing on the buses as well, during those years.....

Were the roof "humps" on these buses the housing for the radio equipment?

Thanks for input.......

No location was given for this 1992 photo of Flex New Look #9178.

The photo looks as though it were taken at a depot or terminal point (looks like a few MTA men on the right)

Note the "contraption" up on the roof; was this some sort of experimental piece of hardware?

I THINK I read, long ago, that there was supposed to be operations where buses could change the approaching traffic light to be in their favor (using some sort of radio relay?), to speed up service, but I am not at all sure...it's been a long while, now.......

That thing seen sticking out atop the front of the Flx bus may be actually the top of a nearby building in the background, so it just might be an optical illusion.

W.B.:

I looked again, more closely, and (at least to me) it still seems that it is something mounted up on the roof of the bus.

Of course, I could indeed be wrong, but that's how my eyes are seeing it....... Rolling Eyes

I figured out the object above the bus which is not on the bus. The location is at Ulmer Park Depot on Harway Ave. at Cropsey. I went to Google Street View to observe the location. There is a high rise apartment in the background. What you see is the structure on the building roof.

B53RICH:

Talk about "appearances are deceiving"! Shocked

I'm sure glad that I didn't bet any $$$ on this one! Shocked

It's truly odd the way an "optical illusion" can work; I could have sworn that the object in question was was something mounted on the roof of the bus!

Anyway, thanks for taking the time to solve the "mystery"!

"NYO"

BTW:

Still am curious as to when the "Tee-Yay" installed two-way radios on the buses; again, I guessing the 1960's.........

Funny . . . I had an instinct of what 'B53RICH' confirmed. If I were a betting man, no doubt I would've won . . . Wink

Lenox & 116th, 1981.

Sure looks like the buses are here subbing for the subways once again (IRT #2 train, in this instance).........

3rd Avenue & 86th, 1981.

Though the theatre marquee is certainly nostalgic today, Flex #9300 is of particular interest, especially under the windows, and its lower body panel.....

.....studying again the previous photo whose link I posted, of Flex #9300:

Could that be quite elaborate graffiti running the length of the bus beneath the windows? (note that it mimics the outlines of the windows themselves)

And, if so, what about the lettering on the lower body panel? (it almost looks like a "SMIRNOFF" slogan, but, then again, I've never seen ANY bus carry ANY sort of ad that low on the body).....

May've been an early attempt at the kind of advertising we now see on buses.

From the angle of the sun, looks like this was taken around 8 A.M. or something.

W.B.:

If your statement is true, than this photo HAS to be rare, as I have never (to date) seen another like it.

Perhaps, #9300 was sort of a "one-shot advertising experiment", as you suggest.

Of course, "wrapping" (which I still do not care for) was still many years into the future when the photo of #9300 was snapped.....

That was a real Smirnoff ad. Here's another, this time with 7750.

MANY THANKS for posting this photo! Wink

With this high-quality photo, I can clearly see that what I thought was graffiti under the windows was actually part of the advertisement!

Thanks again for solving this little "puzzle"....... Very Happy
