MaBSTOA's RTS buses, especially when in the vicinity of older models, indeed proclaimed to all at just how much transit bus design had changed over the past few decades.........

A timeless contrast in bygone bus designs* (Bowery & Mott, 1981)......

*Today, you'd indeed have to attend a classic bus meet to see a handsome trio like this! Shocked

Without a doubt, one of my all-time favorite MaBSTOA photos (Broadway & W. 96th, 1969)

That 1960's-era "OA" insignia truly reflected the era and really looked sharp on the buses; also, there is much more nostalgia here than the bus itself.

The ads on the bus itself, as well as the storefront signage, easily take one back to the "Noo Yawk" of the late 1960's........

Regarding the comment on page 2 of this topic regarding double deckers and depots.

Fifth Avenue Coach based their "Queen Mary" double deckers at least at two depots, 132nd Street and the 76th and Northern Blvd (for route 15 Jackson Heights).

At 132nd Street, many were stored on the roof parking as evident by a photo appearing in the FACO issue of Motor Coach Age, July-August 1971, page 28.

MaBSTOA:

As usual, THANK YOU for sharing still more rare and nostalgic views of the "good ol' days" of "Noo Yawk" buses! Wink

These are REALLY cool!!

One thing struck me looking at the photos; I am quite surprised that none of the men servicing the buses are wearing any sort of headgear (protective or otherwise); especially that this was still pretty much a "hat" era for men, in many sectors.

It would seem to Your's Truly that at least a baseball-type cap might have been worn by these guys; even at that, a good, solid "CLUNK!" to the noggin is INDEED going to be felt, ESPECIALLY if you are not wearing any protective headgear!

Occupational hazards, for sure......

.....also VERY interesting to see pits under the buses for underbody servicing; pits were, of course, standard in carbarns for serving the underbodies of the streetcars, but this seems quite interesting for buses.

PSNJ, I believe, retained a few ex-streetcar pits at certain former carbarns for servicing the buses.....

Talk about "bare bones" (1st Avenue & 36th St., 1982)

Note this Flex New Look is not only totally devoid of any ads, but also, has no ad racks (the bus also looks as though it had just received a new paint job)......

I'm glad you posted this photo!

The first thing that stood out was the all white area above the windows and secondly, the placement of the side clearance light ahead of the rear door!

(by Federal code the clearance light should be higher along the roof line)

Note the lack of side destination sign... all of these lead me to believe that these Flxible were meant to have batwings.

MaBSTOA 15:

You are most welcome! Very Happy

The picture just "stuck out" in my eyes when I came across it; I was thinking much along your lines, the more I was looked at the bus.

It didn't seem like your "average" Flex New Look, at least to me (and I am certainly NOT the expert that you are, here!)

Strangely enough, this is the first time that I can remember even seeing this unusual photo......

No location was given for this 1992 photo of Flex New Look #9178.

The photo looks as though it were taken at a depot or terminal point (looks like a few MTA men on the right)

Note the "contraption" up on the roof; was this some sort of experimental piece of hardware?

I THINK I read, long ago, that there was supposed to be operations where buses could change the approaching traffic light to be in their favor (using some sort of radio relay?), to speed up service, but I am not at all sure...it's been a long while, now.......
