W.B.:

Regarding "SURFACE"........

When were the last of the MACKS (the ones that were emblazoned with the "RIDE THE SURFACE WAY" legend over the windows) retired?

I know I was quite young, but I do remember them; I'm guessing sometime around 1962/63?

I also (again, as a quite young lad) can remember my mother and I catching a crosstown bus outside of the PABT, and riding to somewhere around 2nd Avenue, whee my godmother worked in an office.

This would have been sometime about 1961 or 1962.......

Probably 1963 or so, if you're talking about the oldest. Presumably the first of the C-49DT's ordered in 1954 would have had that motto on the top above the standee windows, and if so that fleet would have been retired along with the 1956 and 1958 Macks in 1967.

W.B.:

Thanks...appreciate this info! Wink

From what I can remember as a youngster starting grade school, I thought it was about that time (I'm talking about the oldest buses)

Well into the 1960's, I can remember seeing only Old Looks and MACKS at the St. George ferry terminal; I have a circa-1963 postcard showing the terminal (as well as the long vehicular lines for the 69th St. boats), and every bus in view (at least a dozen or more) are all either Old Looks or MACKS........

Regarding "Batwings/Bus-o-Rama"........

I'm not sure if this was covered elsewhere in this topic, but when exactly did the "batwing" era end? (also, when was the use of rear door sign boxes discontinued?)

Was the demise of "Bus-O-Rama" brought about by money/maintenence issues, or other factors?

Thanks.....

One of my favorite "batwing" photos; I love photos like this that truly date a "Noo Yawk" moment....... Wink

(photo was taken at 3rd & 34th, back in 1981; note that the former rear sign box area is now covered by part of the CBS 2 News advertisement)

While on the subject of "BUS-O-RAMA" bat wings, I'd love to see someone photoshop a picture of one of the "buses with the sign that sticks out in the front" and ad bat wing ads in sync with that era..... Wink

Sure would be a bus that REALLY stood out from the rest...... Shocked

With 'VIA 7 AVE' blacked out on the front roll sign, hence the huge blank space.

Good to see you back; it's been quite awhile.....hope you are doing well these days! Wink

Regarding "blacked out" lettering/numbers on roller curtains: was this done with paint, or black tape?

Back during the 70's, I had seen a published photo of an Old Look with batwings attached. It was assigned to a senior community in Florida, the ads just had the name of the community. The ad racks were placed above the standee windows, not covering them. Sorry I never cut out and saved the photo.

I've been doing well, except over here, apart from this spurt, there's been little or no activity that would activate my antennae.

I'd say paint was used to cover up blacked out lettering.

I was leaning towards the paint angle, myself (I LOVE that distinctive smell of an older roller curtain (bus or subway) that still clings to the curtain, even after the span of many decades.....ahhh, sweet ambrosia.....a tantilizing whiff of transit history! Wink

PS: Glad to hear that you are doing well, with all this craziness going around as of late......
