.......just heard on EYEWITNESS NEWS (ABC 7) that there are plans now for the construction of a new midtown bus terminal; this I found quite interesting, as the report stated that the facility will be built over the existing terminal, which, in its original configuration, opened in 1950.

If the new facility is built over the existing terminal (as was stated in the report), this would, of course, mean that the new approach/exit ramps will be at a higher level than the exiting ramps.

Too, it would be interesting to see just where the approaches/exits to the new ramps might be located, outside of the Lincoln Tunnel portals.

According to the Eyewitness News report, the new terminal would open around 2030........

The "Port-Of-Authority" (as folks in my old neighborhood referred to the Terminal)...... Wink

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Port_Authority_Bus_Terminal *

*Some interesting historic/modern-era photos on this page, including a view of the old GREYHOUND terminal opposite the late, great Pennsylvania Station.

Also, there's a nice photo of a sharp-looking GREYHOUND Prevost, bound for Atlantic City.......

Follow up.......

EYEWITNESS NEWS AT 4 (ABC 7) just had an excellent report, carried by reporter N.J. Burkett; this report also featured vintage photos of when "The Port" first opened in 1950, showing the original main concourse, as well as a picture of the first bus to depart the new terminal (an ACF-BRILL IC-41!)

Another 1950 photo, showing ribbons being cut outside on an approach ramp, with an ACF-BRILL C-44 suburban in the background!

Artist renditions of the new terminal are also seen; there is also live footage; Mr. Burkett is seen walking past a NJT MCI (aka "Jersey Hound") Very Happy

The new terminal will also be fully equipped to handle all-electric buses......

.........the future PABT is supposed to have a traffic capacity far in excess of today's facility.......all well and good, certainly..........BUT..........HOW can the present, often-gridlocked, traffic-choked Lincoln Tunnel handle the increased bus traffic to a new terminal? (the monumental new facility would be known as the "Midtown Bus Terminal", according to the Eyewitness New report earlier.)

One might think of a new set of tubes being built, under the Hudson, reserved for buses only.

That might seem a logical solution, but, what of the costs, especially in a post-COVID world?

Where would new portals be located? (in New York and in New Jersey)

What would have to be condemned and demolished, to make way for new tunnel construction?

This is something else, of a tremendous magnitude, that also must be fully studied........

Interesting story...thanks for posting!
I hope I live to see its completion...

As for how to handle additional Hudson River tunnels...if they are built, they should extend beyond the Palisades into the Turnpike interchange. The original tunnels would handle local traffic as they do now. Or...they could double deck 495 with the upper level for thru traffic only. The latter would be a 'hard sell', with probably a lot of 'NIMBY' opposition in Union City...

That first departure, was at 12:01 AM...a Safeway Trails 'thruliner' to Raleigh, NC.
There is a mural photo of it on the third floor of the North Wing of The Port.

traildriver:

You are quite welcome, as usual! Wink

I never considered having new "bus only" tubes extending as far west as the Turnpike interchange; that is an idea I think makes a good deal of sense.

When I was growing up in Union City (1960's), locals referred to Route 3 as "S-3"; and the below-grade highway was always referred to as the "tunnel cuts" (great bus-watching here, for sure!)

My mother remembered quite a few buildings having to be torn down, when "the cuts" were being built (she also remembered quite a bit of blasting was required, due to the solid rock beneath street level)

PSNJ, DE CAMP, and a number of other suburban Jersey carriers, were quick to adapt New York-bound service, after "S-3" and the "tunnel cuts" were completed and opened to traffic, over 70 years ago

One also wonders about new "park 'n ride" lots opening, if new bus tunnels were built.

The "double-decking" of 495 is indeed an interesting idea; but, I agree with you, there would be quite a bit of (quite vocal!) local NIMBY opposition to such an ambitious project......

Thanks for jogging Your's Truly's memory; I well now remember that photo/mural in the North Wing (I might have even snapped a photo of it, back when I was still commuting into the city; I retired in early 2004)

That was a BEAUTIFUL-looking bus, I might add! Wink

"NYO"

(I wonder which local "Joisey" bus/route had the honor of being the first to arrive/leave the new terminal, back in 1950)

From an (undated) issue of "MOTOR COACH AGE" (the issue featured the history of DE CAMP).......

".......the State of New Jersey opened a new limited-access highway to the Lincoln Tunnel in sections, between 1947 and 1949; it was originally designated 'S-3', and is now Route 3......."

".......the first portion to be opened ran from the western end of the Lincoln Tunnel approach road in Union City, across the Hackensack River, to Orient Way, Rutherford, and at that time, the Caldwell and Montclair buses were shifted away from the Belleville Pike in North Arlington, and diverted to 'S-3' via either Ridge Road or Schuyler Avenue......."

"......in 1949, the Secaucus bypass was completed and opened, and most DE CAMP trips were routed away from the Town Plaza. In that same year, 'S-3' was extended from Rutherford to to a junction with U.S. 46 in Clifton, and DE CAMP reorganized its Caldwell and Montclair routes to form four bus lines instead of two......."

Also from the aformentioned issue of "MOTOR COACH AGE".......

".....N.J. 3 is the densely-served throat of operations for DE CAMP and other suburban carriers; all of which make highway stops at interchanges (about every half-mile on the average)......."

".....this road ('S-3') is a de facto busway, although it has few amenities other than sidewalks, and no capital investment specifically on behalf of buses....."

Also of interest:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lincoln_Tunnel *

*This is a very intricate and detailed page on the construction, history, and operation of the Lincoln Tunnel.

Be sure to read about of the Tunnel in its first several years of operation; there is interesting information here on the early days of trans-Hudson bus operation through the original tube, which opened in 1937........
