Another one of those classic "we took it all for granted" scenes.........

It does look like the old Third Avenue el remnant, after it was closed and Bx55 service instituted, but before said el was dismantled. Very likely at Gun Hill Road itself. |
W.B.:
Appreciate this info; I always found it interesting that the Bronx section of the 3rd Avenue El survived nearly 20 years after the Manhattan portion (that is,what was left of it by that time; service to City Hall and to South Ferry had already been abandoned)
The Bronx portion of the El was also the final stomping grounds for the very last prewar IRT cars in revenue service (these included the 1938 WF cars)
They were replaced by R-12/R-14 types which served the 3rd Avenue El in the Bronx until 1973.
I'm willing to wager many in that area today have no dea that the El ever existed.......

Gun Hill Rd., 1973.
Note the train of Lo-V's on the lower level of the Gun Hill Road station, above the "BX55" buses; obviously, this Lo-V run was a fan trip.........

Demolition of the abandoned 3rd Avenue El was well underway when this photo of #4892 (note driver is wearing a tie!), holding down a "BX55" run, was taken as the bus passed by the now-redundant supports which, until the previous year, had carried the El trains (1974)
There is, indeed, an air of melancholy, here.......

MABSTOA New Look Flex #9192, seen here on a "BX26" run in 1978, at 3rd Avenue & 149th St.
No trace of the 3rd Avenue El remains to be seen......

Gun Hill Road, back in the days when folks could transfer between the 3rd Avenue El, the IRT subway, and TARS streetcars (a true MECCA for the transit enthusiast of the day!)

Here we are, (once again) back down at 12th Avenue & W. 42nd St. once again (now it's 1971), we see MABSTOA #5321, patiently awaiting departure time; also, note the ad placard on the bus for "77 WABC MUSIC RADIO" (GREAT station, back in those days!)
This scene is a very different one today......

Gun Hill Road, 1973; a Lo-V excursion train is seen here on the lower level of the station, running a fan trip on the soon-to-be-abandoned 3rd Avenue El.
Down at street level, note that the MABSTOA bus (no number visible) has had its a/c unit blocked off........

The far eastern end of 42nd St. was certainly "not in sync" with the western end, at the Hudson River.
Here, in 1981, we see a batwinged #8546 holding down an #M101 run, at 42nd and 1st Avenue, back in 1981...............

12th Avenue & 42nd St., 1971.
Here we see #8570 awaiting the next #M16 run.
Lost New York, certainly........

34th St. & 3rd Avenue, 1982.

It is interesting to note, that, until 1925, the eastern end of 34th St. was busy with the comings and goings of the LIRR's Long Island City-34th St. ferries.
The LIRR abandoned this ferry line in March of 1925; two of the boats were sold to PSNJ, where they were upgraded with upper deck passenger cabins for use on the busy Edgewater-125th St. ferry (this long-defunct line originally had 129th St. as its Manhattan terminus)
(regarding 129th St.: back in the far distant past, the DAY LINE and NIGHT LINE steamers docked at an adjacent pier; the sidewheel steamboats of the IRON STEAMBOAT COMPANY to Coney Island also docked at 129th St., until service ended in 1932. Crosstown streetcars in the vicinity offered ferry passengers an easy connection to several rapid transit lines, as well as the NYCRR and NHRR station at 125th St.) |
