They may've been a "PITA" for those operators, but I still say Luminator was "least objectionable" compared to Vultron/TransDot.

W.B.:

Again, I would concur.

The ACADEMY drivers I was friendly with years ago truly missed the days when all you had to do was to flick a switch to change a sign to the correct reading.

Again, "if it ain't broke, DON'T fix it"........Confused

Here is a 1990's view of an ACADEMY 3200-series METRO departing the Hoboken terminal; a number of these buses were assigned to the (rush hours only) "BOULEVARD EAST" run I once commuted on.

As you can see, the huge roller curtains that these buses once used are no more......

From: "RAPID TRANSIT SERIES BUSES" (McCausland).....

".....forget cranking destination signs; Transbus' displays were all controlled by computer. Here, an operator inserts a punch card (state of the art in 1973)......"

None of this makes any sense to me.

What was so difficult about either turning a crank or flipping a switch? Just another example of some hi-tech, expensive doo-dad that will eventually cause more trouble than it's worth, at least IMHO....

A Transign mylar front roll sign, that is . . . can't tell from the fonts who made SEPTA's.

W.B.:

It would be interesting to know just how many companies preferred roller curtains over electronic signage (that is, until roller signs were no longer an option).......

*If only a Flex New Look was in this gathering of buses, we'd be seeing every type of bus then operated by the "Em-Tee-Yay"! Wink

This photo also highlights the "generation gap" between the three buses seen here......

The Luminator sign on the Grumman was of the LIDS IV variety, with the fonts matching exactly what was on the display of Apple II monitors. When Gulton came up with their next electronic sign for use on the later RTS II's (2580-2704 for MaBSTOA, 1659-1833 for 'Tee-Yay'), they did some changes to some of the number shapes (notably 2, 3, 6 and 9), and doubled up on the columns and rows for the period.

TransDot's signs were on MaBSTOA RTS's 2201-2579, and all but the last 25 or so 'Tee-Yay' RTS's of this make.

W.B.:

You're the one to ask on this one:

Was it the development of the GRUMMAN/RTS that set the stage for the gradual elimination of roller curtains?

I know I have never seen a picture of either a Fishbowl or a Flex New Look re-equipped with electronic signage, if only on an experimental basis.

Recall, too, the companies that DID use roller signs on GRUMMNS aand RTS.......
