|

Fellows:
Watch virtually any classic TV western or western film and you will see at least a glimpse of a "stage".
When one thinks about the stagecoach, you can easily see how these horse-drawn coaches were indeed the ancestors of the modern intercity highway coach.
Look at how many modern bus companies have (or have had) the word "STAGE" in their names.
As the stagecoach was the earliest intercity public road conveyance fir a good chunk of the 19th century, I truly think it is worth at least doing some study on the stagecoach.
The "stage" is probably the most ignored of public transit vehicles from the past, except, perhaps, from the most astute historians.......

Here's an interesting "stage page"
There is much here regarding both American and overseas "stages"; also note how many classic Westerns featured stagecoaches.......

Stage stops ("relay stations") along the old stagecoach lines can also be considered ancestors of the once-famed GREYHOUND Post Houses; also, the great-great grandfathers of today's truck stops.
At relay stations, tired, sweaty teams were swapped out for fresh, passengers could get a meal and, also, something to quench their thirsts, after rattling and bouncing along those long and dusty roads, and the mail could also be loaded or delivered.
At many stage stops, there was also an ice house, which was of vital importance in the cooling of any perishables that might also be on board.......

Earlier, I had mentioned "UNION PACIFIC STAGES"; this "in-depth" page gives a detailed history of Union Pacific bus operations, and much more of historical bus value.
These modern bus operations were far, far removed from the dusty, swaying stagecoaches of old.
There is also much here on GREYHOUND........

A rich (and very detailed) historical page on the history of stage-coach ("horse bus") operation in Great Britain; note that an advertisement for such a service was posted as early as 1657.............

Of course, the "-coach" part of the word 'stagecoach' would form the basis for the establishment of Fifth Avenue Coach Company in 1896; plus, when horse-drawn stagecoaches and streetcars of all types in NYC were replaced by buses, the latter were referred to as "motor coaches." |
