Here is another view of the second-hand Old Look that was purchased by AVE. B & EAST BROADWAY.
I'm guessing, that, from the photos I have seen, that this bus was the only Old Look rostered by the company......

*Curious as to any of the AVENUE B & E. BROADWAY New Looks (GM and Flex) were sold to another operator, or were simply scrapped, after MaBSTOA began operations of the company's routes.
It would have seemed (at least to me) that these buses still had some good years ahead, not being "antiques", as the MACK buses were.

X-Astorian:
Thanks for sharing this letter with us here.
The takeover of "AVENUE B's" routes by MaBSTOA was sort of a hint, if you will, of the takeover of the remaining private bus companies that would come to pass many years later (TRIBORO,/JAMAICA BUS/GREEN BUS/NEW YORK BUS SERVICE)
One can only wonder today, in 2019, what the "AVE.B" fleet might have looked like after 1980, had the company remained independent.
I only wish I had known about this company back in the 70's, especially when the MACKS were still running; I would have been over in the city QUITE frequently, taking a LOT of photos!
Hard to believe that next year (2020) will mark the 40th year since the "AVE. B's" operations were taken over by MaBSTOA.......four decades is virtually a lifetime, you may be sure.....

Another thought of mine is, after the MaBSTOA takeover in 1980, how much of the old routes were followed by the MaBSTOA buses; by this I mean, were there any variations or re-routings involved to the old "AVENUE B." lines, or, were the old lines basically left as they had been.
What MTA routes are these today, and how "faithful" are they to the old "AVENUE B." routes, prior to 1980?

The M8 was discontinued in 1988; its number would later be applied after 1993 to what until then was the M13 - 8th Street Crosstown.
The M9 held in its original iteration for the early years of MaBSTOA / TA / MTA-New York City Bus operation. It is a wholly different animal today. Goes down the Battery, up and down Avenue C, and terminates at 29th Street and Second Avenue. Much of the way it is today, especially north of Houston Street, was broken off from the M21 route.

Avenue B and East Broadway Transit was one of my favorite operators. Their mix bag of equipment was great to watch. I loved their Flxibles!
My brother and I would go to 14th Street just to watch Avenue B in action. It was hard to miss the dilapidated condition of their buses even the brand new Flxibles. We used to joke that the drivers dilapidated them in traffic on purpose just to keep the mechanics busy. LOL… Just kidding.
All the GM New Looks, TDH-4519 and T6H-4521s, were sold to Miami Valley Regional Transit Authority, Dayton, Ohio in 1980. Whether they were sold by Avenue B’s management or the NYCTA is not clear.
The fate of the GM T8H-5308A, #s 626-630, is unknown.
However, the T8H-5308N, #s 631-635 were sold to Grays Harbor Transit, Washington. Only six 5308 non-air conditioned buses were built. The five for Avenue B and one for Medicine Lake Bus Company in Minneapolis. However, these six buses had the roof mounted housing for the air conditioner condenser but no condenser.
Why Avenue B would buy buses without a/c is strange but then they are the same who bought Flxibles with underpower 4 cylinder engines rather than the standard 6 cylinders.
New York City ordered 13 Grumman Flxibles, #553-565, model 53096-8-1 in 1980 for Avenue B. But the company was out of business so these new buses were labeled NYCTA! And yet, MaBSTOA took over their routes. Note that these buses were 96 inches wide with 8 cylinder engines, while the rest of the NYCTA & MaBSTOA fleet were 102 inches wide with 6 cylinder engines.
When Avenue B stopped providing service, MaBSTOA took over their routes M-8 Grand Avenue Crosstown and M-9 City Hall. The question is what buses did they use and from what depot?
Also, what happened to Avenue B’s M-7, M-7A, M-9A, M-9B, MQ-20, MN-20, MN-21, and MW-20 routes?
Below you’ll see two photos…
The first is from an episode of Kojak. Several of the Macks were visible behind a chain link fence. In This case this is #502, model C-49DM. A former demo acquired in 1960.
The second is of #556, Grumman Flxible model 53096-8-1

MaBSTOA 15:
GREAT photos (as always!) and detailed info regarding the dispositions of the old fleet; this was something I had long been curious about....thank you for sharing the info!
It WAS surprising to see the buses sold to distant companies; I would have thought it logical that at least some would have went to one or two of the Jersey City-area "indies", or, perhaps to the now-defunct, long-established "WASHINGTON STREET LINES" in Hoboken, long known for their diverse fleet of second and third-hand relics.

I love this photo from 1975, showing an "Avenue B." Old Look (anyone know what company this bus was originally owned by?)
Note the MTA Flex New Look at the right; I think that this photo is truly symbolic, sort of hinting what was to come, several years later.....
