*It is interesting to note, that, when the "TransBuses" were being demonstrated, all had their manufacturer's logos covered with an "X", to avoid any possible bias when polling the public.....

One thing I've always found interesting about this "TransBus" (as seen in the previous photo), is that, for all of its then-futuristic design, few ever thought of just how commonplace that bulbous nose was to become, in the not-too-distant future......

1:

When did the "Em-Tee-Yay" decide to replace the RTS?

2:

What were the last MaBSTOA routes to use the RTS?

3:

What depots were the last RTS assigned to?

4:

Was parts availability becoming an issue in later years?

I know that among the last MaBSTOA routes to use RTS' were M20 - Eighth Avenue and M42 - 42nd Street Crosstown, can't say about the others. No doubt stationed at Quill depot.

Any info on #6360, which was supposed to be the first of many Nova/Lockheed hybrids?

The bus vanished from service so fast, few were able to photograph it....

......something else I've long been curious about (regarding the RTS) is how "Em-Tee-Yay"/"MaBSTOA" drivers (as well as the drivers of the private companies) regarding them, in the early days.

I've also wondered how the drivers of those days judged them, against the older GM Fishbowls and Flex New Looks, in terms of handling, performance, etc.

Here in NJ, I remember the ACADEMY drivers I that knew quite well more or less "split" between Metro "B's" and RTS buses.

The only RTS coaches that I can recall ACADEMY drivers not being all that enamored with (ditto for the passengers) were those ACADEMY purchased second-hand from DART (Delaware)

I remember them being very sluggish, and their a/c units BARELY working, if at all.

I also, long ago, often rode the ex-MTA RTS's that ACADEMY used on the "#22 HILLSIDE" for some time......

IMHO, the RTS was the LAST new MTA bus that an enthusiast could truly get exited over, somehow guessing correctly, that, one day in the distant future, these new buses would, indeed, be hailed as "classics", and deservedly so (Edgecomb & 145th St., 1983).......

Though I never did get to ride on any of the RTS fleet in New York, I DID get to ride the second-hand MTA buses that ACADEMY used on the busy "#22 HILLSIDE" (this is now an NJT route, cut back to Nungessers from its long-established Fort Lee terminal)

Does anyone have info on the RTS's that the MTA sold to ACADEMY, back in the 1990's?

I'm interested in learning how many of these buses went to ACADEMY, and what numbers they were.

Appreciate any info......

Speaking of the ex-MTA buses (RTS) operated by ACADEMY......

These buses were good performers and gave good service, unlike the second-hand RTS's (I called them the "Delaware Bombs") purchased from DART.

The a/c's BARELY worked (that is, WHEN they worked at all!), the wheelchair lifts were always jamming, and they were very sluggish on any sort of grade.

The ex-MTA buses, on the other hand, were just the opposite; it was always a pleasure to ride them, mostly on the "#22 HILLSIDE"......

Thank you for providing this information; back in the day, I likely rode on most of these ex-MTA buses on the "#22".

How I knew that these were vehicles ex-MTA buses was when I saw the MTA stickers still on certain seats, advising passengers to give their seats to the elderly, etc.

Back in those days, I had no idea that NJT was going to take over the line, nor that it was going to be cut back to Nungessers, 10 minutes south of me, leaving my immediate area with infrequent and slipshod NJT service.

These buses also gave me the chance to ride on an (ex) MTA RTS, something I never got around to doing when they were still in MTA service.....

Good to know. Did Academy maintain the Luminator electronic front and side signs that were part of the T8J RTS's, or did they make their own arrangements? Luminators were my favorite among such signs . . .
