12th Avenue & 42nd St., 1982.
Note only has the abandoned elevated West Side Highway since vanished, but, so have the Fishbowls, "Borough Bombers"(GRUMMANS) and, also, the RTS.
When this photo was taken, it was, indeed, a time of transition............

This 1981 photo (taken at Fordham Plaza) indeed makes for a sharp contrast between the new RTS in the foreground, and the veteran Fishbowls in the background.
How drastically transit bus design had changed in just the brief span of two decades..........

Bus #4912 was originally assigned to Kingsbridge when it was first delivered in 1973. At what point would it have come to Hudson depot (where the M16 was assigned at the time)? |

W.B.:
That's a question best answered by our other expert on "Noo Yawk" buses, Mr. Mabstoa15"; he's the man to answer that one!
Have not seen him around these parts for awhile; both he and his outstanding input has been missed.
I always find the topic of "garage swaps" quite interesting; for the most part, that was something virtually unheard of here in "Joisey", with the exception of some PS/TNJ buses that might be transferred to another division......

Second-hand "Noo Yawk" buses...........
The "Tee-Yay"/"Em-tee-Yay" was not noted for selling retired buses to other companies for further service elsewhere.
The only exceptions I know of were the few RTS sold for sightseeing/charter service in Boston, a number of years ago, and, going even further back in time, several "Shermans", which went to Jersey City-independent "LAFAYETTE & GREENVILLE".
This also has me thinking of the old Queens "indy" companies; did any of them ever sell off buses to other operators, or, were the buses simply sold for scrap?
While on the subject of second-hand buses, years ago, in "BUS WORLD" magazine, there was an excellent feature on Scranton's WHITES, which lasted into the early 1970's.
According to the article, these elderly WHITES were replaced by ex-PSNJ/TNJ "Shermans".............

If I am not mistaken, a number of years back, our late friend Mr. "L" informed me that these two L&G "Shermans"* had been purchased second-hand from the "Tee-Yay".
Your's Truly knew these old buses well, back in the day............
*(Are these buses TDH-5106s, 9000-series?)

Just received a PM from our knowledgeable friend Mr. MaBSTOA, regarding the LAFAYETTE & GREENVILL "Shermans"..........
I was correct that the bus in the first picture (OOS) was indeed an ex-"Tee-Yay" 5106; the bus in the second photo (taken in 1975) he believes to be an ex-PS 4509.
The 4509's, BTW, were very popular with PS; large numbers were purchased, beginning in 1948/1949.
In fact, "D900", the lone-GM "Sherman" experimental ASV dual-powered trolleybus, was a 4509.
PS purchased 4509's with rear exit doors, as well as without.
Thanks once again to Mr. MaBSTOA, for sharing info on these buses.....

Regarding the "Tee-Yay's" 5106s*.........
Recall, the 7000-series (7000-7208) were equipped with "standard" windows.
The 9000-series (9000-9120), on the other hand, featured sliding windows...........

It's funny that some of the 7000's were initially assigned to Manhattan, but none of the 9000's ever went there. I suppose "Tee-Yay" management thought Manhattanites weren't yet ready for "sliding" windows? |

W.B.:
Here, your guess is as good as mine.
Recall, the sliding windows on the "Bingham" MACKS which once prowled the streets of Brooklyn.
Too, remember that, by the later 60's, a number of 9000's were being transferred to the "Island of Staten"
In "NEW YORK CITY TRANSIT SYSTEM BUS & TROLLEY COACH FLEET" (Greller) it also states that, at least some of the 9000s escaped the torch and were sold to smaller bus companies.
This, of course, would have included those sold to Jersey City's L&G..........

Here's one of the last of the handsome 9000's, running out the last miles on the "Island of Staten", back in 1970.............

The serif numbers used to spell out the bus number, I saw a picture of a sign of a Yellow Cab outpost somewhere (I think) in Virginia, that had the phone number spelt out with the same numeral shape (except for the '7'). |

W.B.:
You, indeed, are "the Numbers" man!
Though certainly not as educated as you are on this subject, I, myself, have noticed the different styles of numbers used on both buses and rapid transit equipment, over the years.
Needless to say, the style of numbers used today are just as "ho-hum" as the equipment they are emblazoned on......
