Thanks for the post, this indicates that the use of the Johnson/Keene K-25 came to an end in 1989 within MaBSTOA & NYCTA.

You are most welcome! Wink

I just thought it might have been of some related interest; at that time (late 80's/early 90's) I was riding the subways, PATH, and NJT buses, so would have been totally "out of touch" with what was transpiring regarding new MTA bus fare boxes.

For many years I remember 1920's IRT turnstiles in use at some stations (WALL STREET on both the Lex and 7th Avenue lines) as well as original 1930's IND turnstiles still being used at a number of stations.

This, of course, was before the METROCARD era; those old turnstiles had a nostalgic "Noo Yawk" appearance (and sound!) that today's hi-tech replacements will never have.

Just now remembering a friend and co-worker of mine (sadly, now deceased) whose cousin was an NYCTA/MTA driver on a Brooklyn route, back in the 1970's and 1980's........

Not farebox related, but from the aforementioned MTA publication.....

There is are two photos (interior/exterior) showing a Flex New Look (#7562) bring used as a "CHEMICAL SAFETY PROGRAM" vehicle.

The bus is lettered : "NYCTA EMPLOYEE DEVELOPMENT AND TRAINING".

Inside, window curtains had been installed, as well as several desks with computers.

"......three buses have been converted into mobile training laboratories. Employees use computers to receive essential chemical safety training about potentially hazardous substances they must handle in their work. In 1988, 40,000 employees will be trained on the three buses as well as at three stationary classrooms throughout the system....."

They had a fishbowl that was a mobile uniform shop. I saw it several times parked in queens.

From the aforementioned late 1980's MTA publication; again, not fare box-related, but still of interest.......

"......in 1987, 620 buses will undergo general overhauls, and mini-overhauls will be performed on 160 others. The 1988 Operating Budget provides for 542 general and 419 mini-overhauls on 1982, 1983, and 1985 model RTS buses by in-house forces and outside contractors......."

".....due to Manhattan bus storage needs, 54th Street will not be closed for rebuilding until a new Manhattanville Depot is available for the replacement of 132nd St., and the the dilapidated Hudson depot has been replaced with a new West Side Depot......"

".........Manhattan depot capacity is already strained by the closing of the 132nd St. depot in 1986, due to structural issues within the building. Earlier this year, the second floor of the 54th St. depot was found to be structurally unsound. Temporary repairs have been done to allow 54th St. depot to continue to operate for approximately five years, when it will be taken out-of-service to be rebuilt or replaced..........."

Getting back on track with fare boxes...

The prewar buses used by the Board of Transportation used turnstiles instead of fare boxes.

In fact, North Shore, Eastside Omnibus and Comprehensive Omnibus also used turnstiles.

Speaking of turnstiles, Jamaica Buses used a couple of Perey turnstiles for revenue collection on their Aquaduct Racetrack service. The fare was 50 cents! Waiting for passengers is a GM TDH-5106, #606.

...still on the same track and as promised in my previous post, lets talk about the private operators in Queens and Manhattan.

Queens...

Jamaica Buses... used a mixture of Johnson model "D" and Grant Electrofarers.

Green Bus Lines... used Grants on their New Looks.

Queens Transit/Steinway Transit... had Johnson model "D" on their early GM New Looks. Some Grants were also used. Still later they installed Main Fare Boxes.

Triboro Coach... had Johnson model "D" on their Old Looks and swapped them for Grants. When exact fares came into been, Triboro installed what looked like steel pots under their Grants. How the money was retrieved, I wish I knew!

Eventually, when exact fares became the rule, they all switched to Keene (by then Keene had bought out Johnson) K-25 models.

By the way, two operators never thought as having fare boxes, Port Authority at JFK and Greyhound World's Fair New York 1964-66...

Port Authority had Johnson/Keene K-25 boxes and Greyhound had Cleveland style boxes.

...still on tracks towards Manhattan...

Avenue B and East Broadway Transit... not sure what was used prewar but the Macks, Flxible and GMs had Johnson K-25s.

Surface Transit... had model "D" and Grants as pictured below on a brand new TDH-5106. NOte the coin changer and coin bag.

New York City Omnibus... had a mixture of model "J" and model "D". Some of the "Ds" had a different style of coin drop slot. The picture of the #1929, TDH-4507, has a non motorized model "D".

The driver is indicating the fare increase of three cents. Note the coin slot atop the Johnson "D", motorized.

Prewar they had Johnson model "D" and model "J".

Grants were used on some of the Old Looks while still some of the last Old Looks built had model "D". The New Looks had both Grants and model "Ds"
The Whites model 1150 had Grants.

Demo #3100 had a Grant fare box.

Fifth Avenue Coach, part 2...

The open top double deckers had a hand held Money Meter used by the conductor.

The Queen Mary's had Johnson model "J".

Here some more MaBSTOA/NYCTA views... K-25s in action.

Note that #100, a Grumman 870 demo, has two fare boxes! One has the standard coin slot at the top the other doesn't. Was that a special box for express bus fares?? Note the bus is signed for X61-Peck Slip

The photo showing the FACCo. "Money Meter" REALLY knocked me for a loop; I have the EXACT same one in my collection, which I bought off of an eBay dealer several years ago for $25.00!!!! Shocked Shocked

The dealer had it listed simply as an "antique bus fare register", with no other details given!!!! Shocked

The number is 8689.

NEVER would have guessed this little relic had any sort of connection to the late, great FACCo.....(!!) Shocked

Perhaps the most "unorthodox" fare box photo we'll see here.....

Just came across this photo from circa-1948, showing the interior of MACK #1606, after a particularly serious accident (certainly hope their were no fatalities)

Note the Johnson "D" fare box at a crazy tilt, which, despite the severity of the accident, seems to have weathered the situation pretty well, especially considering the severity of the accident........

http://bus.nycsubway.org/perl/show?3601

Here is an exterior view, showing the extent of the damage to #1606...................

An actual Triboro Coach Keene K-25. Note the "guts" from the vacuum base have been removed.

An actual MaBSTOA/NYCTA Keene K-25 fare box, box number 4401, showing the lock vault in the open position.
