Looks like an 'OA' bus on loan to the 'Tee-Yay', given the number . . .

W.B.:

Your hunch was the same as mine; as the photo was from the MaBSTOA collection, and the bus was seen in Jamaica (NOT MaBSTOA territory!) my first thought was that the bus was a loaner" from the "Em-Tee-Yay".

This makes you think of other instances where MaBSTOA buses were "loaned out" for service on "Tee-Yay"/"Em-Tee-Ay" routes, over the years......

And 'Tee-Yay' buses likewise 'loaned' for service on MaBSTOA routes. We'd both agree, screwy . . .

W.B.:

Agreed 100%, there..."Screwy" with a capital "S"! Shocked

This explains, though, several pictures I have seen in the bus photo archives, where MaBSTOA buses are seen operating on "Tee-Yay" routes......

In this 1978 view, we see MaBSTOA Fishbowl #8474 on the "X13" in Staten Island (a looooong way from da Bronx!)......

I've aways found this photo interesting (9th Avenue & 67th St., Brooklyn, 1979)....

https://www.nycsubway.org/perl/show?153226

(courtesy: nycsubway.org

According to "RAPID TRANSIT SERIES BUSES" (McCausland):

".......private operators in New York, most notably GREEN LINE, had been using small numbers of the Series 03 bus, but the heyday of the RTS in New York really began with the Series 04......."

".......the NYCTA had tested a Series 03 in 1979........"

Was the bus seen in this 1979 photo the "demo" in question?

Thanks for input......

"NYO"

*1979.......no one could have then thought that, at the end of the following year, Mr. Lennon would be gunned down. Too, no one could have ever foretold the horrendous GRUMMAN fiasco of the early 1980's.......

That would have been the "demo" in question. The angling of the back side on top is a key. It was straight from Series 04 onwards.

W.B.:

I had a hunch that my assumption was correct, but I do appreciate the confirmation.

I always thought it a tad odd that the NYC-area "indies" would be operating the RTS before the "Em-Tee-Yay" did.........

For those who've ever wondered at what a three-axle RTS might look like..... Wink (Junction Boulevard & 62nd, 1975)......

http://www.nycsubway.org/perl/show?155429

Interesting that all Trans-Bus demos covered their manufacturer's logo with an "AX", avoiding any possible bias when polling the public.....
