Just saw this report on Eyewitness News (7) a few moments ago

An MTA bus slammed into several cars in Mill Basin, shoving them onto the sidewalk and even on top of one another; the images were surreal.

A LOT of SERIOUS damage, with several autos totaled.

The bus driver simply kept on going without stopping (he is now undergoing drug and alcohol testing);investigations are now underwat.

It is surprising that (thankfully) no one was killed or injured.

Scary as hell.....

You have to wonder what the wreckage would have been if that bus were a 'Patton' (whether regular or 'Bingham'), a 'Sherman', a Twin 'Oddball', a Fishbowl', a 'Dangerfield', or a 'Borough Bomber' - never mind the RTS. Maybe the Borough Bomber (or if earlier, the 'Oddball') may've been among those damaged if it were involved?

As for Channel 7, one wonders how this would have been covered while Roger Grimsby and Bill Beutel were holding down the anchor desk, and who among their reporters would have been on the scene - Doug Johnson, perhaps?

W.B.:

Weird.....I was thinking EXACTLY the same thing as you; had that bus been, say, a "Sherman" or a "Patton", I am quite certain that the wreckage would have been even more severe, given the heftiness, strength, and overall "bulk" of said bygone buses.

I see you are another fellow who recalls "Eyewitness News" back in the "olden days"; I indeed DO recall Doug Johnson doing a report on the double-deckers that were here "on trial", back around '77 (I recall that he was clearly enjoying his report; in fact, he even went on record to say that he liked double-deckers!) Wink

Recall, also, veteran NBC weatherman Al Roker's dad drove a "Noo Yawk" bus, way back in the day; interestingly, a good friend of mine (RIP) from the NYSE (who was also one of my supervisors, who looked quite a bit like Doug Johnson!) told me that his dad also drove for the "Tee-Yay", and was buddies with Doug's dad!

A "newcomer" to Eyewitness News, Johny Fernandez, covered the story on today's MTA B47 bus incident........

These would have been the imported "on trial" double-deckers that Doug Johnson (Eyewitness News 7) reported on, back in the late 70's........

Just thinking.......

Recall that, way back when, the "Em-Tee-Yay" was toying with the possibility of bringing double-deckers back to "Noo Yawk" (thank heavens they didn't, given how insane the crime in the city is these days); I recall seeing photos and articles in the papers then, as well as televised news reports, including the late Doug Johnson reporting on "Eyewitness News" on ABC 7.

Strange, though, how double-deckers HAVE made a STRONG comeback in "Noo Yawk", as SIGHTSEEING buses.

Given the high crime rate in the city today, and just how brazen the criminals are nowadays, one wonders if the sightseers who opt for the open top deck in nice weather, realize just what vunerable targets they are. Sad

Sad. Sad

One cannot help but shudder when they consider riding on a double-decker MTA bus, up in "da Bronx", today in 2023.

The crime rate in that borough has been skyrocketing the past several years, and, today, violent (all too often deadly) crimes are almost everyday happenings there.

What MIGHT have happened had the "Em-Tee-Ay" decided to purchase new double-deckers, back in the later 1970's?

Today, we can only speculate and guess.

Sadly,"da Bronx" has changed drastically and dramatically from the long, long-ago days (and, most certainly NOT for the better) when FACCo's short-lived Route #12 buses were serving the riders........

Thanks for this info; I was not aware of this.

Frightening, to say the very least, when such a "freak accident" involving a city bus takes place.

It is nothing short of a miracle that no one was injured or killed, given the amount of destruction left by the speeding bus............

Though double-deckers were (and still are) commonplace in Great Britain, as well as elsewhere in the world, they have, indeed (with the exception of those used as sightseeing buses) long since disappeared from the United States.

Here at home, several US cities once operated double-deckers, besides New York, including:

CHICAGO

BALTIMORE

DETROIT

ATLANTA

LOS ANGELES

Toronto also once operated double-deckers for a time; closer to home, SURFACE once rostered six-wheel double-deckers, which were later rebuilt into single-deckers.

Here in New Jersey, PSNJ, for a brief time, also operated double-deckers in Newark; like the SURFACE buses, these were later rebuilt into single-deckers.............

But of that batch, only Chicago had symbiotic ties to New York; Chicago-based Omnibus Corp., at one time, owned the Chicago Motor Coach Company (and ditched their double-deckers in 1950, two years prior to selling that entity and its routes to the Chicago Transit Authority) as well as FACCo and NYCO.

W.B.:

When Chicago's "Queen Mary" double-deckers were retired in 1950, this left FACCo as the last operators of double-deckers in North America (recall, the old "open-toppers" had been gone since 1946)

Personally, I am glad that the "Em-Tee-Yay" does not operate double-deckers today; with transit crime rampant these days, riding on a "decker" could, indeed, be quite hazardous to your health..........Sad

Today's "MTA Bus" (and the "Slinky buses")..........

One cannot help but wonder just how efficient the articulated buses (aka "Slinky Express") are in "Noo Yawk".

When London began operating what were then dubbed "The Bendy Buses" a number of years back, it was clear that these were NOT the buses for London.

Quite sobering, indeed, when reading about how brazen fare evaders were with these buses; bus drivers suffered many forms of abuse from the lowlifes who refused to pay the fares (usually punctuated with non-"G" rated language and physical altercation)

The situation got so out of hand, that I read drivers were actually refusing to drive the new articulateds (I cannot say that I blame them)

It should come as no surprise that these buses no longer operate in London, and very few miss them (outside of, perhaps, the fare beaters)

Another issue was their elongated length, which often caused them to block side streets and crosswalks when stopping for passengers, or stopped at a traffic signal.

IMHO, the "Em-Tee-Yay" should have continued to purchase only non-articulateds in the later years, especially given the fact that crime on transit (and elsewhere) in the city is now beyond insane............

Here's an interesting article on London's now-retired "bendy buses"*, w/ some good photos (note section on fare evasion).............

*This article more than drives home the point that these articulates were NOT the bus for London

There's a number of photos here depicting the "Em-Tee-Yay's various "wiggle-wagons"/"Slinkies" (also, conventionals, none of which, of course, have any appeal or endearing qualities)

These nostalgic images recall those wonderful old days when the "B" routes (as well as all other routes) still operated BUSES*, and not giant-sized milk cartons nor mutated caterpillars........... Rolling Eyes
