The (PSNJ) "Chevvies".......

Back in the later 30's, and into the 40's, PSNJ operated another real "oddball", the little Chevrolet buses used on the more lightly-traveled lines.

Drivers HATED....repeat, HATED these buses!!! Razz

From an old PS booklet I have in my collection:

".....these buses had two seats on one side of the aisle, and one on the other. You shifted gears behind you. You collected fares behind your back. You used a long lever to operate the doors, again, having to reach behind you......"

"......Those buses rattled so much, that drivers would finish their workday with a perpetual headache.............."

In discussing "oddball" buses both in "Noo Yawk" and elsewhere, we would indeed be amiss if we failed to include those HIGHLY-unorthodox VERSARE buses that once operated up in "da Bronx"!* Very Happy

That's the way it was during WWII. You would take anything the Office of War Production would allow you to get. It took a few postwar years for production to catch up to demand....

There were, way back in the day, some quite unusual buses/coaches that operated in London; after these were retired from revenue service, a number became "caravans"(campers) or "showman's vehicles" (vehicles used by circuses, sports venues, etc.)

As a die-hard, dedicated student on British buses/coaches from years ago, and a longtime LT historian, I can tell you that there was shortage of unusual (and interesting!) buses/coaches in service, many eons ago (no wonder Great Britain had/has so many bus enthusiast rallies and societies! 9if only we here at home had likewise!)

Before heading back to "Noo Yawk", check out this outstanding collection of photos from the 1960's, taken at London's always-bustling Victoria Coach Station (QUITE a variety, for sure!) Very Happy

Of course, no "Shermans"or "Pattons" are to be seen in this wonderful old photos, but some QUITE interesting and now-classic vehicles!

Today's British buses and coaches are, overwhelmingly, as dull, insipid, and as ugly as they are here at home. Sad

Anyway, enjoy some truly CLASSIC (and unusual) Brit buses and coaches from another era! Wink

Another side of the "Oddballs" built by TWIN.......

It is also interesting to note that, out of all the major bus builders, only TWIN built articulated buses.

In 1938, TWIN built the articulated "QUEEN MARY", which was delivered to Baltimore's BTC, and operated until after WW2.

Unlike most articulateds, this bus did not bend horizontally,making it very difficult to turn corners.

Then, after the War, TWIN built another articulated transit bus, the "SUPER TWIN".

Again, this bus could not bend horizontally.

TWIN built 15 of these buses; fourteen went to Omaha, and one went to the CTA as a trolleybus.

In 1940, TWIN built one articulated trolleybus, which went to Cleveland.

This unit was unusual in that it also had a steerable rear axle.

Recall, also, the "SUPER TWIN" (#400) that operated as a demo in Brooklyn, back in 1947...........

Thoughts...........

Take notice, that, after the War, the "Bee-oh-Tee", outside of the relatively few TWIN "Oddballs" that were purchased, chose to stick with "Gee-Em" and MACK.

Just as well that the "Bee-oh-Tee" did not invest in postwar WHITES, as production would cease in the early 1950's.

After MACK stepped out of the bus-building business in 1960's, the "Tee-Yay"had but two choices for new buses, "Gee-Em" and FLXIBLE.

By this late date, ACF-BRILL had long ceased building buses (not that the "Tee-Yay" would have been interested, anyway)

Strange, also, how "Slinkies" (artics) were beginning to catch on here by the 1980's; at one time, buses such as these were mostly found in European cities; today, they are quite commonplace here in the States (and elsewhere)........

Hen's teeth were by far more commonplace than a suburban-model "DANGERFIELD" in the "Noo Yak" area, several decades ago.

Note this "PELHAM PARKWAY EXPRESS" example (photo taken in 1972) also features an ad frame behind the rear wheels; note, also, the unusual roller curtain reading......
