A gritty "down-at-the-heels" feeling is evident here, in this 1972 view at Tremont & Boston Rd (note also, the old, weather-worn electric signage)...........

1971, actually . . . think that that whole background clashes with the spanking-new T6H-5305A #4451, from the last of the "greenies" in terms of bus color schemes. By then, the 'Tee-Yay' and MaBSTOA, in terms of ordering for new buses, were all over "batwings."

Just imagine that Flxie passing through the UN on First Avenue running on the M-15. Or through Central Park on 65th and 66th Streets via the then M-7 (now M66). Or through lower Manhattan on then M-1 Madison/Chambers. Talk about difference in priorities between the 'Tee-Yay' with regards to original depot assignments vs. MaBSTOA where, in 1964-65, all but one depot in Manhattan got allotments of buses numbered 5201 through 5525 (and this included the last ten with batwings).

W.B.:

Recall, a ways back, I started a topic on the Flex New Looks, "The Other New Look"; funny, though there were many of them in the "Tee-Yay" and MaBSTOA fleets, they (at least IMHO) seemed to be the "second best", sort of the "knock-off" version of the GM Fishbowl.

The CTA, on the other hand, was, indeed, greatly enamored with the Flex New Look, not turning again to GM (after the Fishbowls purchased in the early 60's) until the 1970's.

Personally, I STILL feel that the once-commonplace Flex New Look was sort of like "Noo Yawk's" rubber-tired "Rodney Dangerfield" (NO respect!)

Here, in "Joisey", Flex New Looks dd not appear until about 1976 (the NJDOT buses); I liked the right from the start; the only negative was that thee buses replaced quite a nuber of reaining Old Looks and first-generatuon Fishbowls.......

Here's one of my all-time favorite "Flexie" New Look photos (Washington Plaza, 1970)

Classic! Wink

I'd say those first two orders of Flxies from 1964-66, in terms of depot assignments, not having even a small portion allotted to Manhattan at the outset, is a prime indicator of their being the Rodney Dangerfield of buses, confined largely to the outer boroughs (even with Q-44 buses to which some of the later order were assigned making incursions into "da Bronx," likewise for B-15's and B-39's going into lower Manhattan). I'm sure I've expounded at length on how much it was "split" in those two years, with 'Tee-Yay' going Flx while MaBSTOA stayed the course with GM. (And when MaBSTOA first ordered Flxies in 1969-70, all went to the Bronx, with a few choice routes there entering into upper Manhattan.)

W.B.:

Yup, even further proof that the "Flexies" were the proverbial "red-headed stepchild". Sad

Odd, indeed, that the new Flexies were not (at least, not at the onset) assigned to the more "prestigious" Manhattan routes.

One cannot help but wonder if there was some "anti-Flex" sentiment (for whatever reason) among the "brass" of that era.

Remember, too, when the "Tee-Yay" took delivery of its first GM Fishbowls, they were used to replace the trolley buses in Brooklyn; IMHO, I would have thought that older diesel buses would have replaced the trolley buses, with the new Fishbowls entering service in Manhattan, on routes more "tony" than Brooklyn.....

Actually, it was the second 'Tee-Yay' order of Fishbowls in 1960 where part of it was allotted to "tony" Manhattan. Saw a 1961 photo of a Fishbowl within the 500 range assigned to M-15, running along Park Row/City Hall in lower Manhattan. Then a part of the 1963 order (apparently within the 3700 range) went to Manhattan where they, the 1960 set and 1957 7000 series Old Looks held down all the 'Tee-Yay' Manhattan Bus Division routes for many years (among them one '63 bus posed around the 47th Street-UN terminus for the then M-3 49th-50th Crosstown), till the A/C Fishbowl 8001-8202 buses were delivered in early '67.

One wonders if part of it had to do with the TA's HQ being in Brooklyn, along Jay Street.

W.B:

You might be onto something; I had forgotten that the old "Tee-Yay" Headquarters were at 370 Jay St.

Being that Fifth Avenue was always quite "upscale", one might generally assume that only the newest buses would be placed into service along the routes that then served that "tony" thoroughfare.

From photos I've seen, for many years, Staten Island was not only the place "where the old buses come to die", but, also, a place where GM products ruled supreme (at least, in the years following the retirement of the MACKS)

Through a good chunk of the 60's, I can recall seeing only Old Looks and MACKS at the St. George ferry terminal.

One cannot help but wonder if drivers favored Fishbowls over the New Looks (or, the other way around)

As I had mentioned earlier, Chicago, on the other hand, was tremendously enamored with the "Dangerfields" for a number of years, clearly favoring them over the GM buses.......

From: "WELCOME ABOARD THE GM NEW LOOK BUS" (McKane/Squier)

".......CTA #8600 was part of a group of 150 Flxible New looks that were purchased in conjunction with 150 GM's for a side-by-side comparison......"

"......the CTA would continue to favor Flxible until 1972, when the CTA received a massive dosage of GM's popular T8H-5307A's, followed by additional large numbers in 1974 and 1976....."

From the same book (continuing from the previous posting):

".......both groups of the new CTA Flxibles had 6V-71 diesel engines, with transverse engine installation in the GM's and longitudinal in the Flxibles....."

"......the buses were assigned to several CTA operating divisions for side-by-side comparisons. The Flxibles were the first New Looks in the CTA fleet to be purchased from the Ohio builder....."
