In that form, to 1960, yeah; but TWA remained on that block through 1962 ("TWA JETS," with the scale model "Connie" taken down). As multiple uses for certain elements seemed to be mandatory for signs along what I call "XSQ" (the "x" signifying "times" in multiplication), the twin zippers (both 180 columns x 14 rows = 2,520 bulbs) would be placed in service for WNBC-TV/4 and 660/AM from 1963 to 1966; Delta Air Lines from 1972 to 1975; Tom Laughlin's rare non-Billy Jack film The Master Gunfigher in 1975-76; Rod Stewart's American tour in 1976-77 (to support his A Night On The Town LP); and finally, in 1980, an early Sergio Valente ad ("NOW APPEARING" in double quotes on the top).

It should be noted that in its wake, another TWA "spectacular" billboard was put up atop the Shoppers Corner building at 150 North State Street in Chicago, around 1956-57. It lasted a bit longer there than the New York TWA billboard, to about 1965 or '66. Unlike in New York, however, once TWA vacated that space in Chicago, the zipper and (as first installed around 1963) time/temperature display were shut off for good. The zippers were not uniform, however, and put at an angle; destinations on a 138 x 14 zipper (they really had to shave it close to show 'SAN FRANCISCO'), travelling text on a 234 x 14 zipper. (All zippers, New York and Chicago, were controlled by Trans-Lux supplied perforator/transmitter sets, and technically called "Adcasts.") It should also be noted that the two sign kings of New York - Artkraft Strauss and Douglas Leigh - had fabricated the Chicago TWA "spectacular" as well.

As always, appreciate the always-fascinating input! Wink

Recalling TWA's famed "Connie" fleet, the last TWA Connies entered service in 1957; this was not long before the first 707's entered service, already making them obsolete.

By the early 60's, these later Connies had been converted to freighters 9and they did not last all that long in the cargo business, either)

It is odd, when you think about it, that TWA retired its newest Constellations first, and retired the oldest last.

TWA, also, unlike a number of other carriers, did not purchase any prop-jets (like the L-188 ELECTRA); they jumped straight from pistons to pure jets.

Interestingly, TWA had planned to purchase the (jet) CARAVELLE (UNITED operated these out of Newark) but never did......

The graceful L-1649 "Starliner", the last of the Constellations; none lasted in passenger service for long, as they were quickly eclipsed by the new intercontinental jets then entering service.....

Back in the 60's, I well recall observing UNITED's DC-6's and prop-jet VISCOUNTS (ex-CAPITAL) from Newark Airport's observation deck.

If my memory serves me correctly, UNITED's "Sixes" disappeared about the same time the last EASTERN Connies were retired (1968)

It was fun (and exciting!) watching the old propliners prepare for departure; you'd hear the cough and "ping" of each engine as they were fired up, and then, before you knew it, those mighty props would be thrumming powerfully, sending heady, pungent whiffs of fuel your way.

Was fun, too, watching the airline attendants pull back the loading steps, and trundle them back to the terminal.

Though the 1960's EASTERN scheme ("hockey stick") looked smart and "right at home" on the jets, IMHO, it didn't look all that well on the older propliners.

The original livery of the L-188 ELECTRA, so reminiscent of EASTERN at that time (1959), was particularly stunning (but, no doubt, expensive to apply and maintain)

It's all so long ago, now.......

Here is an EASTERN L-188 ELECTRA in the 1960's "hockey stick" scheme; though not an unattractive scheme by any means, IMHO, it just looked "out of place" on the props.......
