W.B,:

Ahhh, so much for "subtle remarks"! Sad

When the "Em-Tee-Yaay" debuted the "NOSTALGIA SPCIAL" (using the "Standards") in the later 1970's, Roger Grimsby did the lead-in to the story: ".....speaking of trains, the Transit Authority is going to bring back some of the old ones......for a while."

Cut now to footage showing the rstored "Standards" rolling along (to the unlikely strains of "Wabash Cannonball"!) Shocked

Joel Siegel (he always reminded me of Gene Shalit!) covered the story; some fellow from the MTA was also interviewed, and, when Joel signed off, he was in the cab, and gave a brief toot of the whistle (I recorded the audio from Eyewitness News with my trusty portable PANASONIC cassette recorder!) Wink

Dang, where did all those years go..........

"NYO"

W.B.:

You're the rollsign guy, here......

I had posted this 1971 link earlier (LIRR station at Jamaica, 1971):

Note the "Tee-Yay" Flex on the left, only partially visible; you can see the word "LINE" on the roller curtain.

What would have been the full reading?

Speaking of the BMT "Standards" (and buses!) date this view to 1955......

Talk about transit NOSTALGIA!! Shocked

Here, at Marcy Avenue in 1959, we not only have a train of the venerable "Standards", but also, two trolleybuses, a MACK, and, lurking in the background, an Old Look (transit enthusiasts back then REALLY had a "prime-time" show!) Wink

All roll signs shown are Transign, for one . . . I thought I detected a 'Y' on the far left of that Flx. May well be 'to City Line' as from the Flushing depot. The width of the type may be the clue. (The only other Queens bus in 1971 that went to the City Line was the Q24X out of Jamaica, and that route may've had more condensed type showing on the roll sign plus using the newer A/C express buses.)

The only question now is, was that Flx 5639 or 5739? And again, if any 'Tee-Yay' Flxies of the 1965-66 order had Manhattan assignment, would they have sported the 'batwings' that their MaBSTOA Fishbowl cousins were increasingly by that point?

1963.....the famed "Standards" were then into their final decade of service, and Fishbowls were still pretty much "the new kids on the block".......

W.B.:

Greatly appreciate this info; I had the feeling you'd "be in the know"....thanks! Wink

Here again, this photo proves that so many of the old bus photos we discuss here often offer more than just meets the casual eye.

Quite often, there are rollsign variants, incorrect readings, etc., that raise a question or two, and set one to thinking.

That's indeed all part of the fun, when delving into these long-ago photos...... Wink

Speaking of Fishbowls being "the new kids on the block", date this snowy scene to 1961......

Restored "Standards" on the old Jamaica El, 1977.

A Flex is JUST glimpsed lurking in the shadows of the El......

These photos taken at the BMT's 36th st. yard are also worthy of inclusion here:

An interesting (undated) view of the BMT's ENY yards/shops; note a number of Old Looks parked alongside the retaining wall......

I'm betting mid-to-late 1950's. Silver and green was the 'Tee-Yay' paint scheme then, presumably inherited from the 'Bee O'Tee'.

Graffiti-scourged R-16's at ENY, circa-early 1980's.

Note the work-weary Flex on the right.....

A lot of transit nostalgia is present here at Williamsburgh Bridge Plaza, back in 1963......
