A "Tee-Yay" Green Fishbowl with batwing ads for David Frost on WNEW and Rheingold Beer is all it takes to transport us back to 1972.....

The open windows on these non-a/c equipped MaBSTOA Fishbowls tells us that this was indeed a warm (if not HOT) day in the Summer of '72.......

WNEW had moved Mr. Frost's show (then in its last months on the air) to 11:30 to make room for Merv Griffin who'd reclaimed his old 8:30 P.M. slot he had at the station at the time CBS came a-callin' in 1969. |

That bank at the NW corner of Lex and 34th, however, has changed names numerous times since settling there in 1969. Back when that pic was taken it was known as South Brooklyn Savings Bank. Today it is Santander.
The wide font on the front roll sign of #6768 appears to be 1966 vintage. It certainly differs from the '64 vintage signs which would have read "12th Ave." |

#5357, I see, was part of the first set of repainted Fishbowls . . . |

And to quote The 10 O'Clock News' then-anchor, Bill Jorgensen: " . . . thanking you for your time this time 'til next time." Later went to WPIX in the twilight of his long career. |

W.B.:
Your's Truly "came of age" in the late 60's, when my folks allowed me to stay up and watch the "10 O' Clock News", all the way through, even though there was school the next day!
On Friday nights, just before the news broadcast signed off, there was always Miss Rona Barrett (with her hair all teased and sitting in front of a glittering backdrop of Tinseltown at night), beginning her "Hollywood gossip" report with her trademark, "Greetings, everyone!" (THAT is a LONG time ago!)
Ahhh, memories......

Flatbush & Notrand, 1971.
Here, the now-vanished store signage dates this photo as much as the Fishbowl......

Flatbush & Nostrand, 1973.
Note the "Tee-Yay" batwinged Fishbowl bringing up the rear, and the vintage "SUBWAY" sign adorning the station entrance, in the background......

Before Ms. Barrett became part of that newscast, her reports were run on Eyewitness News on WABC-TV very early on in its existence (1968-69) - where she was on the receiving end of many a snide remark from Roger Grimsby (one example, during the sanitation strike of 1968: "Speaking of garbage, here's Rona Rooter with the latest . . . "); according to Al Primo in his book Eyewitness Newsman, she took particular exception to his jibes. |
