With the 1964-65 side sign in place ('MADISON AVE VIA 135 ST' dates it such; the 1966-67 batwings had it '5th & MADISON VIA 135 ST').

Two QUICK questions for the "Rollsign King"...... Wink

When FACCo. (and SURFACE) disappeard and the MaBSTOA ere began, how much work was involved changing/altering the roller curtains of the "inherited" buses?

Also, reflecting service changes, etc., how did "blanking"/"patching" work?

Appreciate input, as always........

I know that when service and depot changes to key routes took place in 1963-64, route signs were definitely changed on the "inherited" rolling stock; at least two such signs have been on eBay over the years. There were three groups: the FACCo depot (only one, on 132nd Street, after the Jackson Heights depot was shut down in '63), those in ex-NYCO depots, and the various Surface lots (the one in Manhattan at Amsterdam, plus the three that handled the Bronx). 1964 cloth curtains were distinguished from earlier ones not only with the particular fonts, but also in descriptions, i.e. "1 Park & Madison via 135 St," "2 Park & Madison via 116 St," and "6 Broadway/Ave of Americas." (The 6 only travelled all the way up Sixth since Nov. 10, 1963, after all.) One wonders why 'OA' didn't have Transign make up mylar roll signs for each side of the "split" front signs - after all, they had for the 1960 FACL and ST Fishbowls. In short, all the "inherited" buses had to have at least the left side of the split front roll signs replaced. Maybe the right side too (especially given ex-FACCo 5's southbound extension in '63 to Houston and West Broadway). "101 3rd-Lex Amsterdam" was also on such NYCO Division-oriented roll signs, as the special 125th-to-23rd short run branch was already there, the rest of the line would be assigned entirely to 100th Street depot after Valentine's Day 1965. Revamped FACCo roll signs would have had '11 Amsterdam & 9th Aves' inserted into those old-style signs once that route's depot assignment was changed to 132nd Street in June 1965.

I presume a special type of black paint, likely matte, was used to 'black out' part of an end destination sign, as was done with 2A destinations on 1966-67 front roll signs after the 2 Fifth-Madison-Lenox line was discontinued in 1969 (and replaced with 101A Third-Lexington-Lenox).

It's tragic enough when one considers that not ONE of these distinctive buses ever made into preservation, but I want to shed more than a few tears when I think of HUNDREDS of these now-historic roller curtains imply being destroyed like so much trash. Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad

The few that survive today, of course, are rare collector's items that command HUGE prices, placing them far out of reach of the "average" collector, if and when one comes up for sale...........sad....... Sad

The other question I wanted to ask (regarding roller curtain alterations) was if these alternations were carried out at each respective depot, or, did the buses have to travel to a certain depot, where it was easier and more feasible to alter the curtains.....

..... that these distinctive buses (such as #2648) were retired when they were, still makes me wonder, in light of the fact that several Hudson County (NJ) "indies" kept at least some Old looks running not only through the 70's, but also, in some cases, into the 1980's, still making me wonder why, at least, a few could not have been sold second-hand.

After all, they were not THAT old, at time of retirement.

The last NHBL Old Looks (on the #1 local) were not retired until 1986; by this time, these two or three buses were at least 30 years old, and STILL getting the job done.....

The newer roll signs were done by whoever fabricated the signs, and in the case of NYCO Division depots, four sets would have been made in the hundreds - going to the 12th, 54th, 100th and 146th Street depots. Whatever add-ons if a depot got a transfer of one route from another may've been done on-site, who knows.

Thanks......this is more than I had known previously.

Back in the day, PSNJ must have had quite an operation regarding the repair/alteration of thousands of roller curtains, especially when ASV trolley buses and streetcars were still part of the fleet.

From photos I've seen, FACCo was light-years ahead of London, regarding roller curtain boxes; "The Capital" did not start installing roller curtains on their double-deck fleet until long after they had become commonplace on FACCo. buses....
