Mention must be made of the horrific and deadly mid-air collision (involving a TWA Constellation and a UNITED DC-Cool; the Constellation went down over Staten Island, and the DC-8 caused catastrophic destruction in Brooklyn (Park Slope)

Truly a horrible tragedy.

Brooklyn bus service in the area, I am sure, also had to have been affected.....

In this haunting photo, the torn-apart remains of the ill-fated UNITED DC-8 fills a Park Slope street; this horrific scene was chillingly reminiscent of an airliner disaster movie.

Far too many lost their lives that tragic day......

This bustling scene from Chicago dates to the 1960s; note the sign "FLY TWA JETS", with the clock below it reading: "TWA TIME: 3:15".......

Of course whoever uploaded this on Pinterest mislocated it as Times Square. Must be that Shoppers Corner building at 150 N. State (atop which the TWA ad was mounted) which looked almost like the Howard Johnson's on Broadway between 45th and 46th . . . too bad they didn't notice the "State Lake Theatre" and the Marina City Towers . . . (I.I.N.M., a BOAC ad was across the street, mounted atop the Walgreens building at 151 N. State).

The time display itself was of the 7 x 11 variant, and made by the same company (General Indicator Corp.) that made the Yankees scoreboard and time displays as in use from 1959 until 1973.

W.B.:

Yup, I noticed that, too........this is NOT Times Square, pal....DUH!!! Razz

When we look back on the electric airline "spectaculars" of years past, it's ssd to realize that so any of these once-commonplace carriers are now "fallen flags", including:

TWA

EASTERN

NATIONAL

CAPITAL

PAN AM

BRANIFF

BOAC

MOHAWK

ALLEGHANY

Given the fact that airlines have been getting battered by the COVID the past few years, I doubt that any of today's carriers would wish to bring back the "spectaculars" of days gone by......

"NYO"

Here's another old view of Piccadilly Circus; the "AIR INDIA" sign could hardly have been deemed a "spectacular".....(!!) Shocked

An "RT" is moving out of the photo on the right......

Earlier, I mentioned the 1960's "FLY TWA JETS" sign that was once displayed in San Francisco......

Don't know if I mentioned this before, but on Broadway and 46th Street where they advertised from 1960 to 1966, '1' was transposed into 'I' on this occasion so it looked like 'VCIO':

You should find the following of interest:

Note the last flight of a BOAC VC10 was in 1981; of course, by this late date, it was BRITISH AIRWAYS.......

Speaking of "bit players", remember, way back in the day, when record stores were a part of so many neighborhoods, urban and suburban.....
