I hope our young photographers include more than the bus in the photo, as the buildings on either side could likewise be researched. To the right (on the south side) I am surprised to see premises used for girlie shows. Someplace over there was a branch of Hotlings, a newstand that carried papers from other states and countries. You can see the phone company building down the block, and the trees of Bryant Park.

Do I see three stores for men's shoes on the north side? |
N4:
I could not agree more; just looking at so many old bus photos (even from the 80's) reveal so much that has since vanished: telephone booths, long-gone businesses, street lamps, traffic lights (did we ever think that, one day, the oh-so-commonplace "WALK/DON'T WALK" signs would vanish into history?)
Look at how greatly and vastly things have changed in just the past 25 to 30 years!
Too, besides the buses, we indeed get a true sense of what it was like back then, by the old autos, taxis, fashions, and so on.
Look at old bus photos that show such landmark stores such as GIMBELS, KLEINS, ALEXANDERS, WANAMAKERS, etc.
Too, advertising painted on walls for hardware stores, TV and appliance stores (tube testing on premises!), etc. is way too often ignored.
Think of a site such as "bus.nycsubway.org" devoted to vintage (and current) photos of taxi cabs.
Like the buses and streetcars of the past, the taxi cabs were (and are) integral parts of New York (and other big cities) and should not be ignored.
After all, those of the past are already part of "transport history"; once the "commonplace of today" becomes "tomorrow's rarity", it's all but too late to document them in photos or videos.....

Though the Fishbowl was, of course, the photographer's main concern here (and you know the photographer was not at all interested in the taxi!) notice the rich conglomeration of old-style signage that really gives a true vintage "nitty gritty" urban feel to this 1971 photo.
Look carefully....there is much of interest that helps to date this great old photo.....

Date this one to 1973 (again, there is much here to catch the eye, besides the bus).......

Recalling the days when Flex New Looks and Checker "Marathons" were simply "everyday" vehicles on New York's busy streets......

*I believe that is the long-abandoned NYW&B station on the right, sub-divided into shops (the old station building still houses shops to this day)...........

I noticed of the 1964-65 group of GMC buses allotted to 54th Street, that depot kept their rear window sets as 3-piece. I saw that, too, in that brochure MaBSTOA put out about the inside of said garage.
As for the newer taxi model in that pic . . . I seem to remember they were among the first to be equipped with AM/FM radios, and the latter as stereo. Was once in one (later in '74) when the cabbie had on 99X and they were playing "Bennie And The Jets" by Elton John. |

As always, greatly appreciate your input and additional information.....
Interesting to learn about that taxi model being the first to have AM/FM radio; I would guess that was a big deal, back in the day, light-years before iTunes, Ipods, earbuds, etc......
Many, many years back, on one of my first trips into Manhattan (alone!) I remember a Checker Marathon on 42nd St., in front of GCT; the cabbie was on his two-way, while WABC played on his transistor radio, on the seat next to him.
I also vaguely remember that MAN articulated, which INDEED turned heads, I am sure.....

Despite the avenue and street where that pic was taken, that bus was not the M15 First and Second Avenues line, but what was then still the QM15 Jackson Heights line (before being renumbered M32). |
