Type in "Los Angeles bus" on eBay, you'll see some L.A. batwing photos. Even on Flxibles, not just the GM Fishbowls.
EDIT: And here is one such pic, below:

W.B:
Thank you for posting this photo; I had not previously seen any like this........a really SHARP bus!
Those "batwings" could really "jazz up" a bus, that's for sure and certain!
Quick question:
Why did the MTA discontinue the use of the sign boxes over the rear doors?
An economy measure, perhaps?

I know that for whatever reason, given what fonts were used for 'batwing' side signs, the MTA weren't too keen on doing updated such signs. (Though there was one 1974 batwing side sign made indicating the M41 Culture Loop I line.) Remember what routes were shown on them, a significant number of which had their designations changed after 1974. How would '15 Fifth Ave Jackson Hts' look on an M32, for example? But as for what year, they were hardly, if ever, seen after 1976. (I saw a pic from that year of a batwinged M10 bus which indicated '10 Broadway' on the side!)

Just a thought, maybe not the actual answer but perhaps new busorama
side destination signs were no longer available due to that the manufacturer was no longer in business, the same reason why the 1975 Flxible fleet were delivered without batwings.

W.B/B53RICH:
Appreciate your input on the rear door roller signs; it does confirm what I was basically thinking.
Those huge signs were very similar to those use on Cleveland Railways Peter Witt and center entrance streetcars (these were front signs, however)
What I did like about such signs was that, apart from being quite eye-catching, they made reading a roll sign much, much easier to read at a distance.
I always thought that such signs were a boon to those who had problems with their eyesight........

Based on where it was, #8486 was mislabeled on the front (29th and Hoyt doesn't exactly seem like a stop on M102). Back then, TB was assigned out of 100th Street depot (it pingponged in the first decade of MaBSTOA between there and 146th Street). I presume it was after the route had split into the M34, M35 and Bx21 designations when the whole Triborough kit 'n' kaboodle was reassigned for a few years to 132nd Street (where it was based by October 1976)?

W.B.:
Once again, I greatly appreciate your VERY in-depth input; obviously, you "Noo Yawk" guys REALLY know your stuff!!
Back in the day (as was seen here in earlier links) TNJ also operated "batwing" Fishbowls back in the 70's; they always caught my eye, and there was just something about them that really caught your attention, and made the bus "POP"!
I have to admit, I DO like to imagine Old Looks with "batwings", but that's another story.......

In reply to B53RICH...
I believe the demise of the side destination signs on batwings was due more to economics than anything else. MaBSTOA was renumbering many of their routes and it was not feasible to re-print the curtains. Only the front destinations signs, the most important, would be done.
The company that designed, manufactured, and sold the Bus-O-Rama and printed the curtains, Transign, was started in 1959 using mylar instead of the canvas like material used up to that point in time. The company DID NOT go out of business, in fact it is still in business printing curtains and the new LED signs.
Should they have gone out of business any silk screen printing company could have done the curtains.
The economics of the time was the reason for the lack of batwings on the Flxibles. In fact, the Flxibles were the only MaBSTOA (#s 7300-7361; 7700-7937) & NYCTA (#s 7000-7204; 7500-7659) buses without side destination curtains.
Also, those batwings took a beating with trees, electric poles, etc. expensive to repair and/or replace.
By the way, the front MaBSTOA destination signs were depot based. In other words, buses assigned to say 132nd Street Depot would have only readings for routes based out of that depot. So when buses were transferred to other depots, the signs would have to be replaced. However, the batwing signs on Manhattan based buses had all the route readings for the buses on Manhattan. Bronx based buses had only Bronx readings. The batwing readings were routing only, for example. "15 Fifth Avenue Jackson Heights"
The same applied to the front destination signs for NYCTA buses and batwing signs, however, the batwing readings were destination signs, for example "44 to Fulton Street"
