Washington & Christopher, back in the days when two-tone Flexies like these were still commonplace......

No doubt, despite being undated, this pic was 1976. Besides the 'RADIOJIT', another thing dating it was the Carlton cigarettes ad which dated it to the early half of the year. (By year's end, they switched to a "Carlton Is Lowest" slogan.)

W.B.:

Appreciate the additional "trivia"! Very Happy

I figured that the photo dated to sometime around 1975/1976.

Two quick questions:

Who originally operated this line, pre-"Tee-Ay"? (I'm guessing FACCo?)

Where were the buses based, at the time of this photo?

Thanks....

M13 (today's M8 )? As a bus line, New York City Omnibus (a FACCo "affiliate"); it had been "bustituted" in 1936, before that was a New York Railways streetcar line. From 1956 to 1962 buses that ran on this route had 'FIFTH AVENUE COACH LINES INC.' on the sides, but it was administered as a "NYCO Division" route.

That Flx, #7325, was part of the entire order of buses for MaBSTOA (7300-7361) that, starting in early 1974, was concentrated out of Hudson depot where the M13 was assigned at the time. Before Hudson opened in '72, #13 had been based out of 54th Street. May've been assigned out of 12th Street into the early '60's. But I saw a few pics where at least one if not two the 20 Fishbowls assigned in 1973 (the 4800-4819 group) ran on this route.

W.B.:

Thanks for the info; this was just what i wanted to know! Wink

I know that NY RAILWAYS was the last operator of the once-commonplace open cars in "Noo Yawk"; the last ran in Brooklyn a few years earlier)

Recall, TARS operated convertibles.

By the time the Flexies you mentioned had entered service, the only non-Fishbowl/non-New Look buses still operating in Manhattan were those operated by AVENUE B (they seemed to be pretty enamored with MACKS!)

Is HUDSON still in service today, or has it been replaced by a newer facility?

It was deactivated in 2003, replaced by what is now the Michael J. Quill (originally Westside) Depot on 11th Avenue and 40th-41st Streets (where once Greyhound had a major depot). All routes based out of Hudson went there except for the M11 which went to Manhattanville - ironic, given that what stood on that latter depot was once known as 132nd Street, and M11 was there from 1965 to 1972 before Hudson first opened.

I had an inkling that HUDSON had been closed, but was not sure; thanks for the confirmation.

Do any of the old "Tee-Yay"-era garages still serve MTA buses, or have they all been replaced?

If I am not mistaken, there was also (years ago) an old Hudson River pier (Marine & Aviation?) that was used by MTA buses (I believe this was Pier #57)....

Pier 57 was the Hudson Depot in question. But as to some of your queries:
- 132nd Street was demolished and rebuilt as Manhattanville.
- 100th Street was rebuilt and now known as Tuskegee Airmen depot.
- 146th Street was also rebuilt and rechristened Mother Hale depot.
- Amsterdam was taken out of the loop as a major bus depot, now only stores Museum buses.
- 54th Street was demolished in the 1990's. At least some routes based there went at the time to Hudson.
- 126th Street has been found to be on some kind of hallowed ground, and no longer houses any 'Tee-Yay' buses.

W.B.:

Ahhh, it seems virtually nothing remains from the old "Tee-Yay"/MaBSTOA eras. Sad

Did not know that "HUDSON" was also the depot at Pier #57.

AFAIK, the only two old ("fallen flag:) facilities still used by NJT are the ex-ORANGE & BLACK garage (just south of here) in Fairview, and the old PS Market St. Garage in Paterson, which will be undergoing renovations; it also served streetcars until 1938.

The other old "Joisey" garages have long been closed (AFAIK), and many have since been demolished, the largest being the sprawling PS garage/carbarn in Newark (ROSEVILLE) which was closed (and since demolished) by NT in the early 1990's.

The former PS garages/carbarns in Union City and West New York still look much the same today, both now used by the local DPW.

At least, they still stand are both very much the same, appearance-wise......

Crosstown was at Box Street and Manhattan Avenue so it was just a couple blocks from Newtown Creek and a bit further from the East River as you can detect from the view.

Thanks for this info; I had no idea that the MTA had a bus facility in the vicinity of Newton Creek,

I was guessing the the location of CROSSTOWN was somewhere in Brooklyn, but could not be sure where......

Besides what 'X-Astorian' noted about Crosstown Depot's location, those were among the order of T8J-204 RTS's for MaBSTOA (those are all within the 2580-2704 range) with Luminator electronic front and side signs - before the buses were retrofitted with side windows that could be open and closed by passengers. But as Crosstown was a 'Tee-Yay' depot towards the northernmost end of Brooklyn, shouldn't there have been 1700's (from the same order - 1659-1833 to be precise) that were actually for TA?
