Washington Plaza, 1972*.
Note train of R-27/30's up above on the El; a few cars have already been repainted into the (yecchh!) "Ronan" scheme......
*(First-generation Fishbowl #501 is still pretty much a "looker"; note that there are no a frames on the sides, and that the ad panel on the dash is empty.

Same location, same year.
Here's an interesting comparison of both paint schemes and roller curtains (Fishbowls)......

The newer roll signs' layout dated to at least 1968 when the first of the third-gen Fishbowls (T6H-5305A) were delivered to the 'Tee-Yay'. Featured U&LC Standard Medium, as opposed to the Transign custom fonts seen on the green bus at left. However, this one has the 'B' prefix, so this would have been prepared in late '71-early '72.
And already both buses have graffiti on them . . . and didn't #6061 just arrive on the property within the last month from when that pic was taken? |

W.B.:
Regarding the changeover from all caps on roller signs (and, on the subways, also, station signs).....
I always wondered how and why this came about; for decades, all caps were "the norm" for virtually all form of public transit.
Interestingly, I've seen quite a few 1930's-era photos of the SP's long-gone (San Francisco Bay) Oakland Pier, which served long-haul trains, and (until early 1939) electric commuter trains (also, ferryboats); this facility was unusual for the time, as most of the signs within the station complex used both caps and lower-case lettering.........

Personally I prefer the all caps roll signs. Specially the ones that included the word “TO”. It served a purpose.
Also, I never liked the amber lights on either side of the destination sign or the black rubber around the windshield, door glass panes and around the standee windows. They looked classier in grey. |

.......I totally agree; I never liked the roller signs that weren't "all caps"; the "all caps" signs, IMHO, were much easier to read, especially from a distance....plus, they were "traditional".
Sure, a roller curtain could (and often did) snag or tear, but, still, it was MUCH cheaper to repair than any sort of electronic sign.
In my area, years ago, I remember seniors complaining of having difficulty reading the new electronic signs, especially on a bright, sunny day (I noticed that, myself)
Again: "....if it ain't broke, DON'T fix it......"

Re. #155066: The #101A was one year, 3 months and 5 days old when that pic was taken; it was created to replace the Fifth-Madison-Lenox #2 line (which extension to 146th-147th and Lenox in 1960 was as replacement for the NYCO Division's #4 Lexington-Lenox route; NYCO's #3 Lexington was basically retooled back in '60 as another short-run #101 branch, only going up Third and terminating north at 125th Street). |

Regarding "TO" on roller curtains:
Personally, I cannot recall ever seeing the word "TO" displayed on any of the roller curtains I have in my collection (PS/DE CAMP/RED & TAN); or, fat that matter, on any other routes I rode, many years back.
"VIA", however, was used quite frequently on many routes.
"ONLY" showed up only infrequently...........

MaBSTOA routes occasionally used 'VIA' along with 'TO', namely:
- Avenue A and Avenue D branches of #14 - 14th Street Crosstown
- After they merged NYCO's #2 and FACCO's #2 into a singular route with two branches in 1966 (and put the latter into the former's depot), the had the former as 'via Lenox' on front roll signs and side signs, and the latter (designated '2A' through 1974) as 'via 7 Ave' - which, after the Lenox #2 was discontinued in 1969, was blacked out on front signs
- The only 'ONLY' I know in MaBSTOA's itinerary was the (ex-FACCo) #10 Broadway, one of which destinations was listed as "to 135 St Only."
This format - which dated to 1960-61 on Transign-made 'Tee-Yay' rollsigns in Brooklyn and Queens in particular - was extended in 1964 to MaBSTOA, when the second set (5201-5525) of Fishbowls for the young agency was built and delivered. |

W.B.:
As always, greatly appreciate the additional historical information.
Too, over the years (and once commonplace with many operators) the use of cardboard cards (often hand-written) in the windshield, when either the roller curtain was not working, or, the bus was assigned to a line for which its roller curtain had no reading (recall, too, the rollsign issues post -Chrystie St. connection, when certain types of cars were assigned to routes for which they had no appropriate readings on their signs (as an example, recall when prewar IND cars replaced the Standards on the 14th St. line?)

8th Avenue (14th St. line) BMT station*, 1969.
Note the prewar IND car on the right; it is showing a new "LL" (post-Chrystie St.) designation, but the destination sign box is blank.......

*Note, also, the large sign for the "Tee-Yay" Training Center...... |
