Another Spanish-language transit ad I clearly remember, especially back in the early/mid-1980's was for "EL PICO" coffee; I remember these ads being displayed in many subway cars, and, I would assume, were also displayed inside the buses.

I cannot, however, recall seeing any "EL PICO" ads on any of the buses......

In the meantime, this 1976 photo was snapped at 34th St. & Madison......

From what I could see passing by, where the Castro Convertibles branch was now stands a Citibank branch . . . and where The Empire Chinese restaurant had been, is now (and has been for some years) a FedEx Office.

W.B.:

So much of "Noo Yawk's" once-commonplace "streetscapes" have drastically changed in the past 40-odd years (change is, of course, always with us, but, not always for the better)

Recall, LAMSTON's, CHOCK FULL O' NUTS, ALEXANDERS, WANNAMAKER'S, KLEINS, GIMBELS.......toll booths at South Ferry for vehicles using the SI Ferry, real-live "DON'T WALK" signs, the famed Times Square "zipper"......so much of what was once commonplace has now vanished, like the classic buses themselves.

Speaking of yesterday's commonplace, when did the "Em-Tee-Yay" began to move away from the traditional "card-in-frame" bus ads to what is used today?

How many different ad frame sizes were available, back in the day?

As to the first question: No doubt in the 1980's as the RTS's were getting settled in as the main bus used to carry people to and from their destinations. I saw "card-in-frame" ads on early models, but as production went on they went to those that were pasted on.

W.B.:

I noticed that myself, when I was working in NYC.

With Fishbowls and Flexies, I can recall the cardboard ads being of several sizes (front/sides/rear)

Then, too, the ad frames on the Flexie a/c units, off-season.......
