A truly modernistic GREYHOUND coach from the '39/'40 Fair........

More great memories...thanks!

I rode most of the services that Greyhound provided at the Fair...
From the Grand Tour, to the circumference rapid transit routes, and even ones that were not listed in the earlier brochure...the free shuttles from the Meadow Lake parking lot to the entry gate. I would walk from my house down Jewel Avenue to catch those at the end of the parking lot.
I rode the Glide A Rides, too. The only thing I never rode were the very expensive Escorter's.

When I worked for Greyhound at Omaha in the early seventies, we had a Company Chevy sedan that had a musical horn salvaged from the Escorter's...it played, what else..."Go Greyhound, And Leave The Driving To Us"....for those of you that remember that jingle.... Cool

traildriver:

Again, it's my pleasure, my friend! Very Happy

Those air-conditioned Fishbowls that I rode with Mom and my older brother at the Fair were quite the novelty; at that time (1964) I had only ridden once or twice on an ORANGE & BLACK Fishbowl, and riding a few times on one of the then-new PSNJ transits in Union City.

To my young eyes, they truly were "The Bus Of The Future"....had the Jetsons been on board, I would not have been the least surprised! Wink

As GREYHOUND was then still very much "America's Finest Bus Line", I always thought it most appropriate that the company played such a tremendous role in transporting follks about the Fair.

I can also remember seeing signs for World's Fair service at the PABT too, during '64 and '65.

Man, if we could only travel back in time.......

Seen here with its original box is a cast iron 1939 WF bus, manufactured by ARCADE; this company was well-known for many years for the production of cast iron toy vehicles.

As is evident here, the GREYHOUND buses used at the '39 Fair were quite futuristic.....

Another "classic" view of a '64 Fair's Fishbowl; the high rise towers seen looming in the background would seem to strike a very contemporary chord today.

As well they should, as this is a modern-day view, part of a movie shoot (out of Vancouver) for the film "TOMORROWLAND"! (bus is seen parked at David Lam Park)

An OUTSTANDING re-creation of those handsome GREYHOUND Fair Fishbowls!

It's unfortunate that this is a 35 footer and not a 40 footer as used at the NYWF!

I see I am not the ONLY one who noticed this! Shocked

Still, that handsome bus sure does bring back a lot of great memories.....all it needed was the UNISPHERE in the background! Wink

Actually, I like the 35-footer done up in the World's Fair livery. Though it may not be one of the actual World's Fair suburbans, they did a good job on the paint scheme. I think this bus is a S6H4503A.

Thanks for the World's Fair posts. They've been really great. I can't get enough of the GM transits and suburbans in the gold-stripe scheme. And the toys remind me of some of the buses I had when I was a kid. The map showing the routes was especially informative as I had never seen the actual routes and services Greyhound operated.

Roy:

You are very welcome....glad that you've been enjoying this nostalgic trip back to "Yesterday's Tomorrow", via GREYHOUND! Wink

I totally agree with you; that 35 footer indeed looks beautiful, and really evokes the Fishbowls that we "older guys" recall so fondly during the Fair, 50-odd years ago.

I recall reading quite awhile back about the disposition of the Sightseeing Fishbowls after the Fair closed; I remember that some when to NJ companies: I know I rode a number of them into the 80's (NJT by that time), but am not sure which of these buses were former GREYHOUND Fair coaches.

Those Fishbowls were among the coolest ever produced.....

Just came across this view of a "Rapid Transit" Fishbowl at the Fair (recall, also, the Fishbowls used in Bay-area commute service by GREYHOUND)......

As I had mentioned previously, I know that some of the WF "Sightseeing" Fishbowls were sold to several(?)New Jersey operators after the Fair closed in 1965.

I have no idea whatsoever if the buses seen in the following 1981 photos were former WF buses, but they do have "sightseeing roofs"........
