All:

Have been wondering how many of today's MTA bus storage depots/yards date back to the "old days".

By this I mean facilities that were in use during the 1950-1980 time span.

Also, what (where) is the oldest of the MTA's current depots?

Appreciate any info....thanks in advance!

NYO

The only one I know for sure is the Castleton Ave. depot in Staten Island. In the 1950's I used to walk through it all the time with my dad, who drove for the NYCTA. It was always a thrill for me to meet him along the line somewhere, then go back to the garage at the end of his day.

Another old bus depot still active is Jamaica Depot built in 1940 by the North Shore Bus Co. for the southeast Quuens routes it acquired from Bee line.

NEW YORK OMNIBUS 2629,

Don't forget JFK Depot built in 1952 for Green Bus Lines and, of course, Triboro's and Jamaica's garages as well.

Regards,

Mr. 'L'

Many thanks for raising this interesting topic.
Regarding the depot at Castleton Avenue and Jewett Avenue:
When I began to live in New Brighton in 1959, the Castleton Avenue depot appeared quite new to me, as described by Hank. I went searching in the New York Times for some reference to it, but what found seems to relate to a garage on the north side of Castleton Avenue. (The present depot is on the south side.)
On July 22, 1931, the NY Times printed a list of real estate deals, including five acres "fronting on Richmond Terrace, Castleton Avenue, and Jewett Avenue," "the last Staten Island holding of the Bodine Family," "held for nine generations." The buyer was The Tompkins Bus Corporation, for improvement for a large building to include executive offices, garage, and workshop.

At this point, my guess is is that the oldest NYCTA depots are: East New York, Jamaica, Fresh Pond, Castleton and 126th Street. At MTAB, all are at least somewhat old except College Point.
