Here's a little mystery that I can't solve so I'll be the pupil instead of the teacher on this one;

In the photo below we see fleet # 7413 - a 1989 MCI Classic (ex New York Bus Service # 1706) operating for MTA Bus and signed for 'PARKCHESTER' standing in front of the Long Island Rail Road station in Long Beach on Long Island.

Parked behind # 7413 is # 7341 - a 1988 MCI Classic (ex New York Bus Service # 1631) also operating for MTA Bus and signed for 'CO OP CITY'.

My question is; what were these buses doing in Long Beach - a half a planet away from their appointed routes in Manhattan and The Bronx?

WCA: This is a totally a guess on my part,but the only thing I can think of is that they were doing railroad relief due to a suspension of service, usually due to track work>

My guess would be a possible Fan Trip.
I like Hart Bus's answer as well.

Thanks for the compliment, but I still think I am closer than you, since I don't believe that any MTA agency charters its buses out to private individuals or organizations.

There is another very remote possibility;

For many years, Green Line (NY), the City of Long and the American Legion sponsored 'Long Beach Orphans Day'.

Buses from Green Line would bring waifs from all over Queens and Brooklyn to the seaside resort for a day of frolicking (it was one of Mr. C's pet charities) and it may be that the MTA continued the tradition.

However, the trees in the photo look bare which would indicate that it was not summer time.

As far as a fan trip goes; anybody who is familiar with that city's bus garage on Long Beach Road would agree that there wouldn't be a lot to see!

I think, at the moment, that the Hart Bus scenario might be the most logical - I remember when they brought the 'used' steel railroad bridge up from Florida back in the sixties to replace the old wooden structure they used buses to cross the channel for several weeks during the installation.

Regards,

Mr. 'L'

It was definitely a fan trip (sorry, I don't have the details).
