The New York Times of 3.21.2011 carries an excellent article by Sam Roberts, "200th Birthday for the Map that Made New York." As this is the last week of completely free access to the Times, I have linked it:
http://www.nytimes.com/2011/03/21/nyregion/21grid.html?_r=1&ref=nyregion
----
The article explains the imposition of the grid from Houston Street to 155th Street, known as the Commissioners' Map and Survey of Manhattan Island. From the viewpoint of public transportation, it lead to some straight north-south routes connecting with east-west routes.
----
The metered-pay system coming to the NY Times next week includes two helpful exceptions: 20 free reads a month, plus a free read of certain pages and if Google has found the (usually historic) article for you.
