While on the subject of Bus Rapid Transit, I thought that I would lay down an idea or two for Rochester,NY to implement it. Main Street/Chili Avenue would be a perfect place for its implementation since all Number 8 buses are through routed on this street which changes names west of West Avenue west of downtown Rochester, something I find most peculiar. Major transfer points along the way, such as Main and Genesee, Main and Thurston, Main and State, Main and Clinton, and Main and University, to name afew could be the major stations on a BRT line on which certain buses on Main Street would run limited from one end of town to the other, while others operate as all stops locals. I see Main Street in Rochester as about the only major thoroughfare, besides Ridge Road where this could work due to Regional Transit Services' hub and spoke nature of its route structure, while Buffalo has a grid system that works quite well. If done right, it could be the next best thing to rail transit without most of the costs and headaches rail transit often entails. The buses are already there and so is much of the infrastructure needed to implement BRT. As much as I am a rail enthusiast, I feel that one must be realistic, Bus Rapid Transit seems to be the way to go in many cities and a better choice than rail. If rail were to be chosen, I would suggest using abandoned trackbeds as possible corridors.
