#2690, incidentally, was the fifth-last "Sherman" ever built for Fifth Avenue Coach Lines and, indeed, the fifth-last of the TDH-5106 line ever built by GM, period, back in July of 1959 (the very last: #2694).

#4621, meanwhile, was the 22d "Dangerfield" built for MaBSTOA (or, as is increasingly known shorthand, " 'stoa") - and the 225th A/C "Dangerfield" in total (of the 111CC-D5-1 class) built by Flxible for all city buses (4000-4202 were built for the 'Tee-Yay').

The only thing I could gauge of that Fishbowl was that it was 2d-gen. No hint of the number.

W.B.:

As always, appreciate your input and detailed info.

Just curious.........

The "Tee-Yay", in 1964, received its first order of "Dangerfields" (5001-5165); a second order followed in 1965-1966 (5601-5790)

Meanwhile, "stoa" did not receive its first "Dangerfields" until 1970 (4600-4727)

I'm wondering now why the "Tee-Yay" received "Dangerfields" several years before the first were delivered to "stoa", even though I know that "stoa" began taking delivery of Fishbowls (325 TDH-5303's, arriving in 1963) ...........

Actually, those 325 - 5201-5525 - arrived in late 1964, same time as the first Flx 'Tee-Yay' set of 5001-5165. This is the period I refer to as "split orders"; while the 'Tee-Yay' took a chance on what we now called "Dangerfields," ' 'stoa' decided to stay with the tried-and-true Fishbowls. Same thing the next year; the 500 they ordered (6401-6900) arrived the same year as the 'Tee-Yay' 'Dangerfields' 5601-5790. (What did arrive in 1963 were the first ordered-for-'stoa set, 3301-3555, same year 'Tee-Yay' Fishbowls 3601-3950 first came on the scene.)

This also begs the question as to the two entities' assignment priorities. Not one of the 1964 or '65 "Dangerfields" ever saw regular service on the Manhattan roads - not to pass by the UN Building (via M-15), nor Rockefeller Center (including the "Are-See-Yay" Building or Radio City Music Hall) or (in its last years before its 1968 closure and demolition) Madison Square Garden III (via then-M-3, today's M50); nor traipse around Central Park (via then-M-7, today's M66), nor travel to/from New York Hospital (via then-M-11, today's M31). But " 'stoa" were putting to pasture the oldest buses of the FACCo / NYCO bunch still in service then (and some Surface that wasn't as dilapidated; not to mention the "Bee O'Tee" hand-me-downs - all post-war, natch') with the new orders - and of course, Manhattan being Manhattan, only the best would do - and "best" in the bus world, apparently, equalled Fishbowls. The 'Tee-Yay's' 126th Street depot, up to 1965, had a few of the old 7000-series "Shermans" plus some of the 1960 and 1963 sets of Fishbowls passing by those places I cited (as of February 1966, it was all Fishbowls - 501-530 and 544-551 from 1960, and 3601-3749 from 1963 - with all those, seems to be the attitude, why louse that arrangement up with a few "Dangerfields"?). When 5001-5165 first came to the city, every one of them were assigned to Flatbush depot. (I wonder how many ancient buses, whether "Sherman," "Patton" or "Bingham," were headed for the torch upon that - although some of the 102-foot wide, 35-foot long 'Bee O'Tee' TDH-4510 buses were doing some service on 'OA' routes with 'T4000' numbers.) Meanwhile, as to the 1965-66 order, East New York depot originally received 5601-5700 while Jamaica depot got 5701-5790 (which oldies were sacrificed for the scrapper upon that, I ask?). By contrast, the 1964 OA Fishbowls went to five of the six Manhattan depots (5201-5245 and 5448-5517 to 146th Street, 5246-5397 and 5523-5525 to 54th Street, 5398-5447 to 100th Street, 5518-5519 to Amsterdam, and 5520-5522 to 132nd Street - thus, four of those garages had the last ten with "batwings"); when the 1965 set first arrived, the 300 "non-batwing" Fishbowls all were initially assigned to "da Bronx" with 6401-6520 going to Kingsbridge, 6521-6645 to West Farms, and 6646-6700 to Coliseum - and all the "batwings" to Manhattan (6701-6735 to 146th Street, 6736-6780 to 54th Street, 6781-6830 to 132nd Street, 6831-6875 to 100th Street, and 6876-6900 to Amsterdam). At least a few years later, there was a swap of some "batwings" with "non-batwings" between Manhattan and 'da Bronx' of the 1965-66 'OA' order; but none of the 'Tee-Yay' Fishbowls at 126th (or as later written on fareboxes, 'MAN') were sent to Brooklyn or Queens in exchange for a few "Dangerfields." (Though some have sworn at least one "Dangerfield" did a run on the M-15 for a time.)

Notice, also, when 'OA' ordered "Dangerfields" 4601-4727, where'd they all go, initially? "Da Bronx," split between West Farms (4600-4663) and Coliseum (4664-4727). This cemented Manhattan as an "all-Fishbowl" town as far as 'OA' was concerned, especially after the last remnants of the 1958-59 FACL "Shermans" with front sign boxes were retired and/or relegated to Brooklyn "Tee-Yay" service starting 1970. The "Tee-Yay's" lot, of course, where they went: Fifth Avenue (4000-4099), East New York (4100-4152) and Fresh Pond (4153-4202) depots - all in Brooklyn. ('OA' did send the last seven of their 1970 "Dangerfields" - 4721-4727 - to Hudson depot in Manhattan in 1974.)

W.B.:

Hats off to you, my friend, for taking the time to post this extensive, highly-informative, and truly "in depth" account of the "Tee-Yay" and "stoa" fleets, especially regarding the humble "Dangerfields".

Take notice, that, in virtually all of our discussions of the "Dangerfields", it becomes quite obvious that these buses were, even when new, NOT receiving any noticeable "respect".

If, then, the "Tee-Yay's and "stoa's" Dangerfields were relegated to the lest prestigious lines, even when they debuted, it seems as though these buses were almost like the proverbial "red-headed stepchild".

Remember, not so long ago, I referred to the humble "Dangerfield" as "The Poor Man's Fishbowl", and "The Fishbowl knock-off"; if these buses were regarded as less a bus than the Fishbowl, then WHY did the "Tee-Yay" and "stoa" even order them?

It would have made more sense, then, to simply keep on ordering GM-built buses.

Recall, also, that the lowly "Dangerfield" was indeed a "minority" bus in a fleet where GM-built buses more than dominated.

Was the City getting a bargain on the "Dangerfields", making them (for the moment, at least) the least-expensive option compared to GM (remember, by that time, MACK was no longer manufacturing buses, so that was another choice that no longer was available)

Remember that the "Borough Bombers", when they were in service for those few brief years, were also very much minorities in the "Em-Tee-Yay's" fleet.

They certainly didn't get much respect, either; however, the "Dangerfields" were certainly NOT known for cracked frames, fires, and other serious issues.........

The CTA: Polar opposite to "Noo Yawk"(bus-wise)......

In Chicago, back in the 60's, the CTA was then operating a VERY diverse fleet of buses, a fleet in which the Fishbowls were indeed in the ultra-minority

There were, of course, a good number of "Shermans" (many ex-CMCCo), "Pattons", WHITES, and ACF-BRILLS well into the 1960's (trolley buses continued running until the early 1970's)

In 1961, 150 "Dangerfields" were purchased, along with a like number of Fishbowls, for an "on the job" side-by-side comparison.

However, the CTA would continue to favor "Dangerfields" until the summer of 1972, when the CTA received a massive order of GM's popular T8H-5307A's, followed by additional large numbers of Fishbowls in 1974 and 1976.................

"GREEN BUS LINES"...........

Here was another "Noo Yawk" company where "Dangerfields" were indeed in the minority.

FLXIBLE supplied only two orders for "Dangerfields" for this operator, with 10 being delivered in 1971, with 10 more being delivered in 1972.

"TRIBORO"

This company took delivery of their first "Dangerfields" during 1964, eventually operating 65 of them (purchased over a period of eight years)..............

And it was Triboro's first purchase that spurred the 'Tee-Yay' to get their first "Dangerfields" that same year - that, and that demo bus #200 that plied the #3 49th-50th crosstown and Q-44 lines in the prior year.

Who knows, maybe Flx at that time submitted a lower bid than "Gee-Emm" for that set of new buses? Purchasing for new equipment with regard to city agencies does seem to strike me as being somewhat schizophrenic. Especially in a city such as "Noo Yawk," where we have over the years had some "lulus" (i.e. the R-46's when first delivered with the troublesome Rockwell trucks, not to mention the "Borough Bombers").

Also . . . would you know what "older" buses of the "Tee-Yay's" - many dating back to "Bee O'Tee" days - got retired/scrapped in the period the first two sets of "Dangerfields" first entered service? We know the first Fishbowls they ordered were, in part, to replace the Brooklyn trolleybuses . . .

W.B.:

As always, great input!

The following is from "NEW YORK CITY TRANSIT BUSES" (Martin):

".........New Look General Motors buses began arriving in 1959. So many new buses were being delivered in the postwar period, that the numbering sequence for the New Look buses started at 1....."

"........the first lot was 190 TDH-5301s, numbered 1 through 190. These buses were initially assigned to Brooklyn, to replace trolleybus lines. These buses went to Queens in 1964........"

Remember, also, that, the C-49-DT ("Pattons") [6210-6317) were delivered during 1956, retiring the remaining C-45-GT's on Staten Island.

As to what old "Bee-oh-Tee" buses were retired as the new "Dangerfields" were arriving, I (not being an expert on the subject) can only hazard a guess.

I'm guessing that the "Dangerfields" replaced at least some of the "square window" Old Looks still in use at that time.

As for Chicago, being that the CTA rostered a massive fleet of postwar TWINS (aka"Oddballs"), it could possibly translate into their favoring the "Dangerfields" over "Gee-Em" buses...............

Sidenote:

The oldest of the "Bee-oh-Tee" Old Looks (aka "Shermans") were the TDH-4507s, and the TDH-5101s (1948); the oldest "Pattons" were the C-45GT's (also delivered in 1948)

The first "Shermans" with paired windows were the TDH-4510's, delivered in 1948. Interesting, that in 1948, the "Bee-oh-Tee" took delivery of "Gee-Ems" with both square windows and paired windows.

This was also the same year that the 1900-1961 series "Pattons" were delivered......

Sounds similar to the 'Tee-Yay' and " 'stoa" plunging headfirst into ordering the "Borough Bombers" come 1980 due to their ordering nothing but "Dangerfields" between 1973-74 and 1977. In OA's case (and even, to a lesser extent, the "Tee-Yay's"), even penetrating the tony areas of Manhattan (that is, if you consider the Rockefeller Center area, and that around the UN, "tony"). Notice after the 1972-73 custom-made Fishbowls ordered for both (plus, in a 1973 batch, MSBA for Long Island), they didn't order from 'Gee-Em' again until 1981 after the RTS's backside was sat up straight after their initial run as from the private companies sloped in the back.

W.B.:

Again, you make some very good points.

I, myself, have long wondered what things might have been like had the "Em-Tee-Yay"/"stoa"ordered early model RTS instead of going "gung-ho" with the infamous "Borough Bombers" (GRUMMAN)

Most certainly, the "Bombers", in no way, could even begin to match either the Fishbowl or the "Dangerfield" for rugged construction and reliability.

From: "RAPID TRANSIT SERIES BUSES" (McCausland)

"........private operations in New York City, most notably Green Bus Lines, had been using small numbers of the Series 03 buses, but they heyday of the RTS in New York really began with the Series 04, albeit somewhat accidentally....."

"........the NYCTA had tested a Series 03 in 1979, but, instead, awarded a contract for 837 40' 870As to FLXIBLE, owned at that point by NORTHROP-GRUMMAN. The buses began arriving in New York by early 1980, but they did not last long. What was to happen to the 870's was nothing short of a soap opera....."

This bit I find particularly interesting (regarding the earlier purchases of the "Dangerfields", instead of "Gee-Em" buses......

"........just as any operator was bound by law to purchase buses from the lowest bidder, they too were bound by law to stick with the existing contract. NYCTA would have to prove that their buses were actually defective, thus rendering GRUMMAN unable to sell within the United States......"

".....in the meantime, older NYCTA buses that were in storage, slated for scrapping, were brought out of retirement, and 150 WAMATA buses were borrowed to help ease the equipment shortage crises......"

Sidenote:

Had the "Em-Tee-Yay" and "stoa" decided to go with the RTS right out of the gate, instead of with the "Borough Bombers", the city of "Noo Yawk" would have really been on the RTS bandwagon at an early date, and eliminated the chaotic "Rocky Horror Show"/"Soap Opera" chaos which ensued that GRUMMAN fiasco.

I always thought it odd that the "indy" companies, and NOT the mighty "Em-Tee-Yay", were the first to roster the RTS in the area........

Those 204's had two variants: T8W which utilized TransDot electronic front and side signs, and T8J which used Gulton Luminator electronic signs. I have opined in many places as to which of the two I preferred.
