False Alarms is correct. I'll look for the PCC's when I get to the other one.

Cyberider:

You'll have to look QUICKLY; the camera will be looking down the long flight of steps to the street; that's where you'll glimpse the 'cameos" pf the then-new PCCS..... Wink

This is interesting..........

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Gibbs_McAdoo

Though he was once the "head man" of the "Hudson Tubes"(PATH) as well as instrumental in their construction, design, in 1923, he also roposed a bus system for Los Angeles......

Sounds like the rail companies were still solidly in control when he made his proposal. If he had come along 20 years later, things might have gone his way.

Agreed.

I was also thinking along the same lines....

"South Of The Border"............

I've often wondered how many retired PE and LAMTA buses were sold for futrher use south of the border.

Several years ago, a photo was posted in a topic here(I cannot recall on which board), that showed heavy traffic in downtown Lima, Peru
.
A number of Old Looks were in the picture, still painted in PE and :AMTA colors...............

I knew about Mexico but not Peru. Those would be interesting photos to see.

I was quite surprised indeed to see those buses still wearing their old PE and LMATA paint; then again, look at how many ex-"Red Cars" were still wearing their old PE paint, when they were sold for for further service, in Mexico and Central and South America.............

Interesting.........

Though quite a few retired PE cars went "south of the border" after retirement, none of the "Blimps" were sold for service elsewhere.............

Perhaps they were too large and too old to be of use on most systems.

Cyberider:

Indeed, the "Blimps" were BIG, perhaps TOO big for any of the Mexican/South American systems then in operation.

Then again, the Birneys were also far from new, when they went "south", along with a number of other older cars, including elderly single-truck opes.....

The newer NWP blimps were run hard on the PE. These were known as the "hot rod" blimps due to their aluminum bodies. At the end of service in 1961, most of the survivors were the SP blimps which had steel bodies and were built about 1911. True, there probably weren't many street railways that could handle anything that size.

When I was a kid, my Dad took the family on a ride to Long Beach from LA and we rode these cars. That was in 1959, two years before abandonment. My Dad was a big interurban fan. Must be where I got the bug from.

Cuberider:

Lucky fellow....,,I envy you! Wink

I always found it interesting that, while so many associate the "Blimps"only with the PE, they were, as we know, second-hand units from the East Bay (SP and NWP) andran on "commuter" lines ,ore in sync with electric operations in the NY area.......
