Interesting......

When "NYO" buses replaced the last NY Railways streetcars, they obviously followed "Fak-ko's" example by purchasing new YELLOWS.

It is also interesting to note, that, when 'NYO began operations, it started with seven different loots of 718s.

Then, in 1940, when the company purchased the Triangle Bus Company, the purchase included 9 MACK "CWs" and 11 used INDIANA coaches; interestingly, "NYO" never operated any of these second-hand buses, continuing to operate only the YELLOW 718s.

Interesting, also, that "NYO" then dominated Manhattan bus routes, with the prestigious "Fak-ko" in second place........

And, both "Fak-ko" and "Nye-ko" were owned by the same entity - Omnibus Corp. of "Shik-aga," thus sisters to CMCCo in the "Windy City."

"Nye-ko" had, up to 1940, not only the 718's but also 728's, 731's and 740's (the last-numbered later rebuilt on their front to resemble the "Kramdens").

It was noted that "Nye-ko's" maintenance practices were considered in-between to the "prestigious" "Fak-ko" and the decrepit (especially after entering into bankruptcy protection in 1949) "Soiface."

"Pee-Es-En-Jay" was another die-hard YELLOW customer; back in the 30s and into the 40s, the fleet was totally YELLOW, save for one "oddball" MACK (an "ASV")

The steadfast loyalty that the company showed YELLOW was later transferred to "Gee-Em" by late in the War; hundreds of new "Gee-Em"-built buses were added to the massive PS fleet through the 50s and 60s, and into the TNJ era.

The "Gee-Em" dominance came to an end in the later 1970s, when nearly 900 new NJDOT "Dangerfields" began arriving.........

The reason for the shift from Yellow to "Gee-Em" is simple: after 1943, Yellow, as far as bus manufacturers went, had become "Gee-Em."

DE CAMP was also a company that purchased a lare number of YELLOWS, especially through the 1930s; however, they also purchased a number of (front-engine) WHITES.............

Further on "Noo Yawk" bus history........

IMHO, a long-neglected area of "Noo Yawk" bus history involves the oft-forgotten men who not only DROVE the buses, but, also, REPAIRED them, PAINTED them, CLEANED them, DISPATCHED then, etc.

We know that, out there somewhere, there are both historic photos and documentation regarding this area.

Locker areas, driver's lounges, dispatcher areas, etc; also, there should be coverage of the roll sign shops, paint shops, etc.

Just my own 2 1/2 cents worth......... Wink

In short, the depots that housed those buses.

I remember reading and hearing that bus maintenance personnel in the depots preferred the rear window 4-piece layout for both Fishbowls and "Dangerfields," as they were easier to maintain and cheaper to replace than the 3-piece lot - which was why all new buses starting with the 1965 orders ("Dangerfields" 5601-5765 for the "Tee-Yay," Fishbowls 6401-6900 for " 'stoa") came from the factory with 4-piece at the back from the start.

"Boigan" Street might've painted some of those roll signs on the buses, mostly the "Kramdens" but also on some Fishbowls up to 1965. But for the most part, the roll sign making was left up to companies like Hunter Illuminated Sign, then in the "mylar" era Transign and Translite. There should definitely be a section on those entities.

A little "Soiface" trivia for a Saturday afternoon...........

The thirty TDH-5106s delivered in 1954 had the distinction of being the last new buses to wear the familiar (and stylish) red and white paint scheme...........

Ah, but what about the 10 C-49-DT's ordered that year (2990-2999) as well as the 1956 lot (800 and 2962-2989) of that same model? I'd agree, those 30 "Soiface" "Kramdens" from 1954 (originally numbered 1060-1089) were the last "Gee-Em" models to bear the red and cream scheme, for sure . . . it was the 1958 Mack (3000-3009) and 1959 "Gee-Em" (3020-3059) orders where newly-minted "Soiface" buses began carrying FACL's green-and-cream scheme. Not to mention, of course, the 50 "Jetsons" from 1960 (3161-3210).

I've long imagined what the 5106s ("the buses with the sign that sticks out in front") might have looked like, in the classic red/cream "RIDE THE SURFACE WAY" livery; indeed, they would have been STUNNING, to be sure! Wink

Your's Truly will, of course, always wonder what "Dangerfields" would have looked like, in "Soiface"paint................ Very Happy

And what would their "Jetson" Fishbowls have looked like with that "Soiface" paint scheme? Not unlike those "The Little Red Bus That Could" rostered in their last years of operation, I'll wager . . .
