Don't know if you "hoid," but recently a man was dragged to his death after his shopping bag got caught at the door of an A train in Brooklyn - probably the "foist" such incident involving the new R-211 class of cars:

This was all over SubChat . . .

W.B,:

Did not hear ofthiss; thanks for the news.....so truly tragic.

I often wonder why the "R-211s"were not built with singlle-panel doors, like the current LIRR/MN rolling stock.............

"L" train woes................

For the next two weekends, BMT "L" service will be out, between Manhattan an and and Lorimer for ".....the instillation of new communications equipment and also trackwok......."

Free shuttle buses will be available.

More of the old BMT biting the dust................

Wasn't the 'L' already 'CBTC'? Sounds like the computer programs are already obsolete . . .

W.B.:

I was thinking the SAME thing.

And, on the flip side, block signals safely governed the subway system for over 100 YEARS, before they were deemed "outmoded". Shocked

"Safety checks"..........

On the news, a report was shown, about the poor fellow who was dragged to his death the other day, caught in the train doors,

The conductor has stated that he failed to do his "safety check", sticking his head out of his window,to be sure the doors were clear, checking his monitor instead.

He also said he was once assaulted doing so, and did not wish a repeat of the incident.

1010 WINS this morning also covered this story, and then played the clip from the ORIGINAL "The Taking Of Pelham 123", where we hear dialogue what REAL"protocal" was, regarding the closing of doors in stations (could hear SMEE sounds in the background)

Recall the days when conductors stood between the cars and,i n full view of all, "slapped the caps" without fear of bodily harm?

Sad commentary on both the subways.....and society in general........

Worse, that 'el' didn't even make it to the point the Mets won the first of two World Championships to their name - unlike the old 1938 'WF' cars that by then were plying the "Toid Aven-yah" el in 'da Bronx' and had another month to go after that.

W.B.:

And, in 1969, the last of the elderly "Broadway Battleships"were soon to be retired; and, over at "stoa", the distinctive "buses with the front sign sticking out" were also running out their last miles, gone by 1970........... Sad

And wasn't it at that point, that the lower level of the 42nd Street-8th Avenue station was closed for good?

W.B.:

I believe you are tight.

There was also a period in the mid-70s (I recall this) where the lower level was also used by rush-hour "E" trains.

I remember ,into the 90s, the lower level stairways wee fenced off, but you could see that the platform stillhad some lights.

A few years later, those stairways were covered over.

I also recall an old IND change booth that was being used for the Aqueduct Special's riders..........
