More than a few rail historians have wondered why neither the CNJ nor the DL&W never rostered gas-electrics, especially that both roads then had a number of branch lines, well-suited for such cars.
The ERIE used their hulking "Go Devils" not only on certain commuter runs out of Jersey City, but also, on branch lines, especially in New York State.
The NYS&W often used theirs in mixed train runs, until the early 1940s.........

Iy is impossible to discuss self-powered rail cars and NOT mention the great-granddaddy of them alll, the futuristic, Jules Vern-esque McKeen Motor Car.
They were indeed "ultra modern" for that innocent era!
This is an interesting historical/tech page, with a number of rare photos.
Note how many railroads once operated these unique and highly-distinctive rail cars.......

That even ONE of these pioneering rail motor cars survives today is nothing short of incredible; consider the fact that these futuristic cars debuted well over 100 years ago!
In one of my books on the ERIE, there is a very rare photo of an early "McKeem" undergoing trials on one of the ERIE's branches in New York State; the ERIE, obviously, did not opt to purchase any of these eye-catching units.
It was not until "doodlebugs" arrived on the scene, that the railroads began to get interested in self-propelled motor car; in this venue, many units ran for decades on branch lines and smaller roads.....
