LT trolleybus trivia...........

The ex-LT trolleybuses that ended their days in South Adrica were referred to as "tram buses".

At a stop, a metal sign would be affixed to a line pole, reading:

"TRAM BUS HALT"

Where motor bus would stop, the sign would read:

"MOTOR BUS HALT"

This, of course, was many, many years ago............

Here's an interesting page on LT's "SA" (South Africa) class trolleybuses; interesting, detailed info as well as photos of a detailed model.

These two classes of trolleybuses were particularly interesting; sadly, all were scrapped..........

As you can see, the preservation of historic buses in Great Britain is indeed a serious undertaking (check out the photos of some beautifully restored buses....and note the variety!) Wink

Not surprisingly, the preservation and display of historic buses has also been long established "down under" (some rare and handsome vehicles here!)......... Wink

Historical note:

Many former LT trolleybus conductors preferred working on the older "RT" double-deckers, as they had fewer seats than the newer "RMs", and, thus, had fewer fares to collect en route.

Likewise, many bus conductors preferred working on the older "RTs", as they were smaller than the larger "RMs". and had fewer seats..........

ACF in London.......

In the early 1900s, ACF supplied the Underground with a number of early MU cars; these cars were shipped (unassembled) to Great Britain, where they were re-assembled.

In time, ACF built a large plant in the London area, for the building of "tube" cars............

Further.........

One lone example of an ACF-built "tube" car is displayed today at the vast LT Museum in London; this car, dating from the 1920s, is a "DM" (Driving Motor"), of the pre-1938 stock.

Pre-1937, all London tube motor cars had their electrical gear ABOVE the floor, carried within the car body between the cab and the passenger compartment.

It was not until the introduction of the "1938 stock" that all electrical gear was located below the floors.

The pre-1938 "Standard" driving motors were fearsome vehicles, indeed!

The last of these distinctive rolling stock were retired in the 1960s.....

Here is the lone surviving ACF-built pre-1938 Underground "Driving Motor" at the LT Museum in London; note how much of the car body is dedicated to housing the complex ganglia of electrical gear........

Also at the LT Museum is another pre-1938 "Driving Motor"; after being retired from revenue service in the 1960s, this unit was used in work service for many years (note the large amount of space required to house the electrical equipment)

The "Standard" stock was also the last to use clerestories........
