W.N.:
As always, THANK YOU for proving the historical info I was looking for.
And, to think, a handful of "Kramdens" lasted in Hudson County until 1986.......(!!)

That's funny - that's just about how long a Marbelite LPS-20 lasted at a crosswalk in Jersey City leading up to the sterile Journal Square "Transportation"[sic] Center. Because I saw one there in '86. |

Greattrivia!
Did not know this!
To think, 60-odd years ago,"TheSquare" was a thriving, bustling beehive of bus activity, not to mentiom great movie houses, shops, stores, restaurants, etc,
Like today's souless Times Square, JSQ is only a place, as far as Your's Truly is concerned.....the great days (like the vintage buses and "Black" cars themselves, are now long, long, gone)......

And wasn't that a spark that began the fire that culminated in the opening in 1976 of the Transit "Mew-seem" (as Chevy Chase pronounced it)? |

W.B.:
You are correct; these vintage cars were indeed the "starter's kit" for what later became the NYCTM.
Too bad one set of "Qs" was not retained and restored to their 1939 appearance.
Funny, when you think that, in '65, some "Lo-Vs" were still in "soivice", on the "Thoid Aven-uh' El up in "dar Bronx", while the iconic "Qs" were still "holding court" on "da Moit".
And the fearsome "Broadway Battleships" (Standards) would still be on the job for several more years.....

Also in '65............
The SI FERRY's first diesels, the long-lived "KENNEDY" class, entered service, replacing the old twin-stacked steamers of the "DONGAN HILLS" class.
The fearsome, hulking BMT "Triplex" units were retired..........

"R-10" ("Thunderboids")
"R-11"
"R-12/14/15"
1938 WF "Sieinways"
"ME-1"

Ironic that the Triplexes outlasted all the "Bee-Em-Tee's" other "articulated" stock, no? But it was said that the beginning of the end for the "D's" (and last of the unrebuilt "Broadway Battleships") came with the arrival of the R-32's.
That seemed to be the case with their rolling stock. The remaining "Broadway Battleships" would outlast the Triplex - and the "Q's" would outlast them all. (And the R-32's longevity now sits in-between the Standards and Q's.)
Also . . . wasn't it the case the "suits" wanted the "D's" retired before the Chrystie Street connection opened for business? (And why the "Battleships" were in their last years consigned to the Eastern Division, so they wouldn't see action on the new sections either?) |
